Toyota 86

From the reviews I've seen, it is an excellent drivers car. It is underpowered though, but this car is more to do with razor sharp handling and trashing it through the corners than straight line performance.

Toyota and Subaru should be commended for creating a simple, light, well sorted handling chassis with minimal electronic wizardry to keep it on track. Its just you, 6 forward manual, 3 pedals, rear wheel drive and a high reving engine, what more would a driver want?

Who knows maybe this is the basis for the upcoming Z2, with the recent Toyota BMW tie up?

The car should have similar handling and fun characteristics as the Honda S2000 and Mazda MX5 and if you think these are boring you probably have never driven them.

Personally I think the 86 will be epic!

The S2000 is a powerhouse though. And I don't think that people are saying it's a bad car, it's an awesome car, but I'm not spending 300k on what I would consider a downgrade from my car.

Its definitely not a downgrade. Being the owner of an E46 M3 and recently driven a friends brand new Mazda MX5 all I can say is the MX5's handling feels allot better. Any speed any corner the turn in is sharper and feels more controlled than the ///M. Obviously the Mazda doesn't have the all out speed but its one hell of an awesome car. Also remember the ///M makes the sports pack suspension feel like it was designed by a two year old so comparing all out fun and speed of any non-///M E46 to the MX5 or S2000 these cars make the E46 feel like a whale.

Obviously alot of people are high on boost these days, and for good reason as even BMW has gone this route as well, but the engine in this car is only a mere 2L with 147kw and 200nm torque, in a car weighing 1200kg, it is adequate. It is the design of the engine, being a boxer which is the strong point as it allows a lower centre of gravity for the car, and contributes to its handling balance in the corners.

Obviously for some BMW owners it is all about "how many kws my car has" and not much else. :thumbdo:

Why don’t we compare this 2.0l engine output of the 86 against a 2.0l BMW engine like the e90 320i

The last time I checked 147KW is slightly more than 110KW :fishwack:

Anyway - Like ASH has said - it is not about the KWs, but about the driving experience where this little car excels according to all reviews. I am test driving one as soon as possible.

And the 2L engine in the S2000 produces 184kw with bulletproof reliability.

The cars handling might be great, but how often is that a factor as a daily drive. This would be an awesome track car/weekend toy. Then again, for 300k, I could build a pretty awesome track car.

The interior is what actually puts me off the most. I suppose that they are trying to save weight, but the lack of quality makes it appear cheap.

The s2000 makes 177kw.That came out in the year 2000.

IMO grossly underpowered esp if you up here at the reef. Remember the Rsi, well that made a meaty 142 kw like 10 years ago.(And that was 1.8l if im not mistaken. So in all that time they gained 5 kw??

Handling and response can only go so far to flatter the purist.

Give me the Forcefed option please...if it ever comes here.

AFAIK - the first 86's that will be launched are the low end models. During the course of the year, or even early next year IIRC the high spec models will be launched. There is a TRD version aswell, which I hope will come to SA.

This is a car aimed at the enthuisast and from what I've read, it is really a driver's car.

Yes it is a 'drivers car'... problem is I see more ladies than enthusiasts actually buying them.lol

The TRD just looks to have some suspension and brake upgrades, but there could be some power mods in the pipeline. If it does come with a turbocharger, the price will probably jump to around 400k.

Its the same with the 1series coupe, alot of ladies also buy them as well, but it's a great drivers car, I think the size is appealing to the ladies? :fencelook:

Saw one today in Milnerton ...black'ish one, with 'ADAM 86 - WP' plate... had a quick glimpse...it doesn't look too bad...but the car is so small :mmm: I swear if a hilux would rear end that car, the bakkie would be resting on its roof on account of how small it is

seems to be an awesome car, but for me I'd rather buy the new Polo GTI, price also under 300k and comes with everything besides xenons, also has good fuel consumption and good power, Think the PGTi is a good car to compare this car to, can't compare ///M's etc

The new 320i has 135kW. not that far off (but with the aid of a turbo though)

I watched this vid and think all the BIASEDness is pretty funny. You can see that the 120i was deliberately driven into those cones. I couldnt watch much further than that though :bangdesk:
From the vid you can see it does have good handling...compare it to a cayman is a bit too much though.

A bit long...but you get the idea after a minutes...

The guys at Toyota call the 86 the "Toybaru" lol

Neat car, i need to test drive one.

I see your point there Mo, only problem is the Polo bodystyle is extremely common, and the 86 has it beaten in the looks department, it only really needs a larger set of rims.

Think as people test drive and buy the 86, the respect will come through...........

Drove one today...

Needs a turbo or super charger.

I feel like my 318is is as fast...and my car isn't.

Boot is pathetic small.

But I'd get it cause it has potential

and don't expect to drive with more then one passenger.

Best handling car and value for money right now. Though I have a feeling there will be a boosted model in the near future...
