Hi all, Long time no see...

I am at home from the DRC for my second 24 day visit from 5 August...

I had quotes done on my E39 and have to have this done apparently:

Front Shocks R 2 002.55
Front Shock Mountings R 1 138.97
L & R Side Rack ends complete R 1 457.90
Rear Shocks R 2 151.73
Lower Control Arms - Front R 1 978.55
Upper Control Arms Front R 2 428.38
Stabilizer Link Arms Front R 376.62

Labour Shocks Front and Rear R 790.00
Suspension Labour R 1 200.00
Wheel Alignment R 390.00
Consumables R 235.00

Total R 14 149.70

Does this look ok?

I have to drive her to Sedgefield next week and cannot afford to have all of this done at once, so I also need advice on what to do first please.

Other problem would be that she will certainly need new tyres shortly.

Any advice please?

Keep well

Welcome back!

I would do the shocks front & rear & front shock mounting and the alignment. Leave the rest for another day when the lotto pays up.

Chances of the upper control arms being gone is slim - mine has done 280km+ and is still perfect. The bushings would certainly be done, though. Replace those. Lower ones need to be inspected. Same for the rack ends. If you are getting clunks over bumps, end links might need attention, they are difficult to inspect, though. Shocks and shock mounts would be a good idea - if they were worn, the car will already feel like a new car.

Start with the shocks, shock mounts and upper control arm bushes (the front CA is the upper one - it goes over the other one and has a bush that can be replaced. The V8's is different.) Then see how she feels, maybe you need to replace the stabilizer end links as well. And ask them to tighten all the suspension bolts when they are done.

The total price to me does not sound that bad... Brother In Law payed that for a full service and gearbox oil exchange @ BMW on his 540i.

Welcome back!!

The prices are probably not far off what most places would charge, so not sure how much of a better price you will get from place to place. But R 390 for alignment does seem a bit steep for what it's worth.

Out of interest, where did you get the quote? Maybe try Precision Wheel Alignment in Parrow - they replace the lower control arm bushes on my Wife's E46 and seemed to be pretty clued up! If I can recall I paid about R1600 for this which included alignment. So might be able to better this quote...

Ok... So I drove to Sedgefield and spend a week driving around with my E39 and "stuffed" suspension with no problems at all.

I did remove the Cats before I went and the Toyota Tazz sound while travelling was very irritating, I have to say!! Now after two resonators and a box later it sounds more like a BMW should.

The only sad thing that happened yesterday was that my ABS warning light came on as well as the traction control light and is still on...

It was on my way to the Road worthy to have the suspension checked.

Good news is that there is just some dust covers that are perished, small play on the steering rack and some time in the future the RR control arm or something will have to be looked at...

I am worried about the ABS and Traction control and have to say that it seems the brake pads fitted about 3000km ago has gone for a dump!! I have serious sounds on te left front pads and the right front is nearly gone!!

Could the lights be because the brake pads are shot?

I hope it is not the speed sensor... mega $$$.
