Parents just spoke to the bank today, and apparently we won't be able to get finance on R180,000 rather more something like R150,000 so it looks like the BMW fantasy is becoming more out of reach again.

Get an E46, keep an extra 10k aside for a rainy day (repairs/maintenance) & you'll be better off.

I currently do it with my dad's Corsa Utility 1.4 Sport and I'm fed up with the crappy power output as well as the 4000rpm rev drone at 120 km p/h.

Dude, it sounds to me like you have a working, (probably) reliable car at your disposal and you don't have an income yourself. (I may be wrong?)
Let your parents off the hook and drive what you have. Financial freedom is much nicer than a shiny BMW.
One day when you can comfortable afford it you can buy your dream car.

Wow... So much for INSURANCE???

Alright, I will give my honest opinion here on the e90 320i.

I've only ever driven one e90, and that was a 320i auto in black.

As people know I am a very sporty person, so the performance of the car felt very lazy. I was not trying to race the car, not at all, just drove it around for a day or two for a friend who was overseas and needed me to keep the battery alive and wash the car now and then. Now my reasoning for feeling that the car was lazy may be because I drive an M3 as an everyday car, but, that being said, I also drive my brothers 318ti e46 often and that just seems to give a more pleasurable driving experience than the e90. Probably no where near as fast if one would care to try race the two, but the 318ti just felt more fun to drive. Nippy little car.

Granted, I have owned e46's for the past 9 years and maybe I am used to the interior, but the e90 interior for me was very bland. Hate it infact. The auto box is caught sleeping every time its supposed to change gears, no wonder my friend wants to now sell it and go back to her Audi.

The car is still leaps and bounds ahead of other cars from other brands in a similar market, but I would put my money on a decent e46 individual with Msport trim.

Good luck man!!

Had an E46 and the primary reason she was sold was due to the fact that repairs were banktrupting us. Lost almost R15000 just in repairs.

Thats just the thing. The Corsa is going back to my dads company on Friday then I'll be back to the Gomoto 125cc which is not so much fun in peak traffic, never mind the coming winter. And the Gautrain's prices are also incresing on the 1st of June. Travelling from Sandton to Hatfield every day is about R2280pm incl scooter petrol. I bet driving a 120d or 320d is also in that price region for diesel pm or what do you think?

Oh, now I see your predicament. Yeah... you better find a car soon! :D

I went to Potch University and never needed a car there, so I didn't get one even when I had the option. I didn't want to spend my meagre allowance on petrol.
When I started working I got a 1300 Tazz (all of 55kw with a 4sp gearbox) which I drove for 7 years until last year when I got my 135i.
I realise that my way of doing cars is the exception, but if I were in your shoes, I would get something relatively small and light.
I would want something relatively reliable, and if what I remember of my friends' petrol habits back in the day, something frugal.

If I were in your shoes, I would look at the < R100k Japanese and Korean cars. Maybe a Getz or a Suzuki swift? My brother loves his Swift, and he is also someone that absolutely loves driving (and drive my car better than I do... :fishwack: )
Otherwise maybe an E36? I believe those are pretty reliable and not that expensive. From what I've read above even an E36 318 would be more fun than the E90 320.

edit:

Assuming 160km at 5l/100km and R14/L (I round up, OK) it will pretty much cost the same, but you will also have to factor in the monthly payment and maintenance.
Depending on the route you take, I wouldn't risk my life on a scooter.

I understand your point. I really like the E36 but I reckon that Hatfield might be the perfect place to get your E36 thieved. Im also considering the Polo 1.9 Tdi but cant seem to find one with less than 100,000km. My uncles one is going through a turbo horror and the stealers quoted him R15000 for a new turbo. Just wish I had more time to consider but with the studies I rarely ever see the inside of a car dealership.

Good point about theft.
I would steer clear of the polo Tdi's. I've heard too many horror stories about that motor, and every now and then about the rest of the car as well.

In that case, if you want to go BMW, the 120d is a pretty nice car. Compared to the E36 it would probably make up the difference in price over 80 000 - 100 000km due to the better fuel economy, all other things being equal.
I haven't heard anything about it's reliability, so that must be a good thing.
