E36 to E90 upgrade

I have been driving my E36 318i a/t for about 12 years now. She is old, sick, tired etc. I figured the only way to get her sorted would be to leave her with Fritz to sort out the mechanical stuff and then my cousin who is a panel beater to sort out the paint, interior etc. My delay were mostly funds and I would need a ride to be mobile. So yesterday I bought a E90 323i a/t. It is the individual I think and has the sports package I also think. The selling points for me were the spotless condition, low mileage 65k, some other things and yes the start button. Never had one of those before. O yes it has full service history and were services 2000 km`s ago.
My question is for now, as a new E90 owner... what are the first things I should do? O yes I were thinking of swopping my wheels, but not sure if it is a good / bad idea?

Congrats on the new wheels. I also went from a E36 (1994 318i) to a pre LCI E90.

Honest opinion, i would keep the wheels, they look great

Congrats on the new wheels, if memory serves me right, that kinda looks like Style 216, which if it is the case, is a BBS wheel

Ok. Yes I saw BBS I think on Google, but thought since it had the sports package maybe it is something else.

Thanks for the info's guys, but my question were actually "My question is for now, as a new E90 owner... what are the first things I should do?"
I am doing much research etc., and collecting the car this morning from the dealer. I also just learned last night from an ex E90 owner that the car does not come with spare wheel, jack or wheel spanner.

I had my E90 330i for 10 years an that was my introduction to BMW and what a solid car. The N52 engine in the 323i, 325i and 330i is proven to be very reliable, mine was on about 220k km when I passed it on to a relative 2 years ago and they're still driving it. In that time, only issues I had were the water pump failure, heat exchanger failure and tappet cover gasket leak. Other than that, just normal service and changing wear and tear items.

A very well-known issue is the water pump (and thermostat) and plan to change that at around 150k km. Otherwise, enjoy sheer driving pleasure.

Congratulations ! she's a beauty! 65K for a 10+ year old car is almost unheard of, but I suspect the number won't stay so low for long after you start enjoying the car more. The N52's are solid and reliable engines, not the most economical or powerful, but smooth as silk and tons of fun to play with.

However, being a engine from the BMW Bangle era, there are some common and cheap preventative maintenance items you should probably consider, more for future-proofing than anything, because at one point or another they will give out, for most of the items there's no specific mileage or age where they fail, so you'll have to keep your hand on the car or just keep it in the back of your mind. These include:

OFHG - Oil filter housing gasket
OFCG - Oil cooler Gasket (if you have an oil cooler I'm assuming)
Aluminium water pipe fitting upgrade (same as n54/n55) This WILL CRUMBLE when you do the 2 jobs above, or even look at it too hard, very rare, but has been heard to fail during normal operation, empty the cooling system and leave you stranded.

VCG - Valve cover gasket (drips oil onto exhaust manifold and smokes)
VVT Gasket - Valvetronic motor gasket (fills the spark plug valleys with oil and causes a miss on Cyl 3-4)
PCV valve replacement (I would honestly just wait for one of these to fail, and then tackle them all while you're there)
ECC Gasket - Eccentric shaft sensor seal (wouldn't bother, unless it started to fail, or you were doing the VCG)

Things to consider (budget for) replacing for longer term ownership:

DISA Valves (run to fail)
Brittle cooling system pipes (especially the top radiator hoses)
Waterpump (run to fail)
Thermostat (run to fail or replace with waterpump)
Vanos Solenoids (clean/inspect maybe once a year, run to fail)
Vanos check valves (clean/inspect maybe once a year, don't really "fail")
and the radiator while you're at it, why not, they age and develop pinholes.

common serviceable/consumable items:

Coil packs
spark plugs
V-belt and tensioners/pulleys

that's about it, tese are just the common issues amongst owners, other failures are possible but not common like sump gasket leakes, guibo failure etc, but anyone that would like to add to the list would be great. Most of the parts above are available from the big chain Spares stores if you choose to go that way, and with the exception of the longer term items are quite cheap.

And there's your 4 min intro to N52 ownership 😂

As payment I will accept the wheels😅😅

Oh, and if you plan on doing any of this yourself, make sure you get a a decent 1/4" and 1/2" torque wrench, and set of E-Torx sockets.

Wow. Really nice info thanks.

Wow thanks some really good info.

According to my research on the VIN number, it has the N52K motor and they made some improvements to it over the normal N52. Is that correct?

Hey bud, have my e90 330i for a long time. Amazing cars and only preventative maintenance is regular oil changes. Few known issues as the guys mentioned but only replace when needed. Water pump, thermostat, valvetronic motor, PCV valve and oil filter housing gaskets. Don’t think the 323i has the disa flaps.

If you decide to sell these wheels I’d definitely buy them from you.
