which 320i and 320d? if you talking e46 they equal if you talking e90 then the D is a little quicker because bmw decided to make the e90 320i kak slow

It might be different now that the petrol engines are also boosted, but it will be close and the diesels will win very far based on consumption.

The d is a lot quicker... so much more torque, and at least has boost.... the 320i has a rev range for days, and nothing satisfactory if you enjoy a more spirited approach to driving

Ok, never driven a 320i down at the coast, but I'll take your word for it...
As for the d debate... I don't believe anyone buys a 320d coz they lazy and want to drive fast, wanting to drive fast requires a skill that you need to be capable of, not just your car... The only confusion I have is seeing a 320i fully kitted, people spending 350-400k on that thing, when you can just buy it 2nd hand, and instead of getting the 2.0l lazy as hell motor, get a 330d...

lol where did i say people by the 320d because they 'lazy and want to drive fast'
fact is the 320d is easier to drive fast because it has high torque and people mistake this for real speed because they have to work harder to get the true performance out of a petrol NA...
have to agree thou the e90 320i has a POS engine i would never even look at getting one, but a 325i or 330i is nice and within the 320d/330d price range

I just bought my 330d and I am very happy with it. I did a time of 14.95 on a qaurter mile and I am sure if I had more traction it would have been the same as my ol Subaru WRX that did the same qaurter mile in 14.5 and what is nice it was at half the fuel cost of the old Scooby. Bouth the cars were stock. So I would recoment the 330d over the 320i. I have not driven the 320i but have driven in one and it seemed a bit lazy.

I totally support P1000 on the motorplan thing, added onto that guys with balls buy high miledge bmw's as well.
My low down on this as I have said a gazzilion times.
the 320i is honestly a lovely car, it has enough power to make it a lovely comfy long distance cruiser, if thats you kind of thing. I would buy my wife a 320i, not a sausage would I own one myself. Keep in mind that the motor in the E90 320i shared its beginnings from the N42 which was in 01 in the E46.
The N46 is a good little motor, if you keep its designed purpose in mind. however they tend to break if not looked after properly, and can be tricky.
Now on the next bit, folks may disagree with me. I personally feel like the 320d motor is too highly strung, the motor constantly works at max mechanical force, max boost ect, and thats why the guys are having such crap with the 320d's
the x30d motor however was designed by the gods, I love this thing to pieces and if I cant drive a BMW V8, i will drive a x30d.
My diesel now has 230 or something on the clock, we changed the exhaust manifold the other day, which meant turbo out, and while the veins were somewhat clunky, the turbo still looked damm good, and I drive that car properly.
On my way over, was just shocked again by the amount of torque in the lower gears (5th and 6th) that this car has, it just does not stop.....
And as for the turbo going, try the VVT motor on an N46 (320i) and see how much thats going to cost you, or a gazillion other little small parts that make the fancy head trickery possible.
Fact, there are less sensor input and mechanical parts on the diesel motor, less things to break.
Fact, there are just as many other things that can go wrong on a petrol 4 cyl if you consider the risk of the turbo.
Hell, buy a second hand diesel, and have the turbo replaced straight away, going to cost you like 9k or something, and you know that you are good for another 200,000km.
Fact, the two things that goes on diesel motors are turbo's and injectors, so plan for this, buy a set of injectors from overseas and put them in your garage.
Fact, high miledge for a diesel 6 cyl is here from 400 onwards, 200k on a diesel BMW is NOTHING.
Fact however, any vehicle with a large amount of toeque and an auto box you run the risk of having gearbox failure, torque kills boxes. So either budget for this (25K) or buy a manual.
Eyes closed, buy that diesel, if I could replace my 318 with a 330d, I would do that in a heartbeat....
