Ticking/Knocking noise while idling on cold start

The Ticking/Knocking noise is back :thumbdo: while on a cold start. Once the engine is warm the noise is gone.

It used to only do it in winter on a very cold winter morning. This morning it did it, and its warm weather today.
It hardly did it this winter compared to last year.

Any of you experiencing this?

I've done a voice recording of it, but cant upload it onto the thread.

Its the tappets, its more common in winter and as the oil gets old. An oil change should help.

I also remember reading about this problem on the pre-2008 N52 engines. There's no mechanical issue, it's just a nuisance I guess. BMW fixed it on the very last of the N52's and got rid of the problem altogether on the N53 in e90 330i. Thankfully haven't had that issue on my car...

Same issue with the E36’s also, mines being doing it for the last 100 000km so don’t stress. Frequent oil changes and a slightly thicker oil can reduce the noise tho.

Could be tappets... I have heard that the fix is to change the complete head with later spec internals

Good day - see you mentioned a thicker grade oil. My mechanic mentioned 25W60 in my 320d e90 (324k Kms). What grade did you try?

I've been using 20w60 now for a while on my 2.0d, no issues

Hmm I thought I might be having the same issue, but mines a bit different. On cold start and for the first while, when I rev there's a very rapid ticking sound that increases with my acceleration. But after a couple minutes it goes away.. took it to the dealer and they said this is normal for my engine, just cold. My 118i F20 never did it though.

But if yours is like the vid in the link, then it's not the same. That's a very low frequency ticking, which might be the oil like the others said. Let us know if it comes right

I also experience this similar noise on my F30 328i, the timing chain was replaced last week and thereafter vacuum pump this week.
