BMW S55 engine - loud ticking sound @ cold start

Hi Guys,

Thought i would share my experience on the S55 engine and especially the "fairly common" issue of a ticking sound (like tappet noise) during cold start. This sound lasts for about 5 minutes until the car is warm. Researched this issue online and many overseas forums highlighted that some guys have had this issue since new and some only after about 10K kilometers.

There were instances of guys overseas querying this with their local BMW dealer, only to be told it is normal and not to worry about it. Then there were a few where the dealer actually investigated and found the issue. It is related to the exhaust cam and whether or not it was torqued correctly from factory apparently.

I unfortunately experienced this on my S55 and also thought it to be normal, but my car went in for a service recently and thought i would ask them to look at this noise as well, without giving any more than what i hear during cold start.

Well they kept the car overnight, started it the next morning and the Tech confirmed that he can definitely hear the sound and it is not normal.

Long story short, they stripped the top of the motor, took photos, sent it to BMW SA. Confirmed that it was the Exhaust cam. Replaced some parts and torqued to the correct setting.

Buttoned everything up and confirmed that the sound is no longer there the next morning @ cold start.

Thought i would share this for those who may also have this issue.

Shew, bullet dodged. I’m guessing this is on MP.
correct yes under MP. I also forgot to mention that they found that valve cover was warped when re-installing and replaced that as well. Not sure how that happened but oh well was replaced with e new one so all good.

unfortunately i did not record it at the time, but sounds exactly like this one which someone else recorded.

There is no way this sound is "normal".

Glad you sorted under the MP. That bill was cheaper than what I expected. I have to laugh at the R288 for cleaning the engine bay.
