I'm sure the events team will have something "chilled" planned for May, as it's the BMWFanatics birthday month. Generally a get together for a braai, or something.

I am amused how comments are asked for, and then mods come back and tell you its the members fault. Let's be frank, fanatics is a business and its members are it's customers. If there is a problem, then something the business is doing is incorrect.... For me the issues is clear. The members of this forum have very different views on what being a BMW fanatic is..... For some it's spinning in a car park, for others it's appreciating an oem bmw, putting the 2 together will never work

Some good points. This should be treated as a business problem. The fanatics community is incredibly diverse, so there is no one-size fits all, the market needs to be segmented. Perhaps having events that target the different segments of interests. E.g. one type of event targeting members who appreciate preservation/OEM/restoration, and another event targeting members who are interested in modding or racing/etc.

Hence the formation of difference cliques with different ideas?

Without sounding like a self-righteous D-bag

In my view, the forum is a community. Within the community are various families(cliques) ... If you're friends with members of the forum on Facebook or within a whatsapp group, there's clear evidence of how close everybody is, solely because of the forum.

Every newb finds the clique they fit into and, usually, they become part of that family forever. It isn't always as easy as attending a single meet and having a sense of belonging.

As the forum name would lead you to believe, we're a bunch of BMWFanatics. From there on, our ideas and preferences dictate who we do and do not get along with... If an individual is unable to find somebody, amongst the thousands of members, with whom they get along, there's no need to point fingers or name names.

First or first few events can be difficult for new attendees. I remember attending my first and not knowing anybody.

While you do find some members standing around in groups, I dont think it really has anything to do with cliques. You generally find yourself spending your time with people you know best. Remember those guys met each other online and at events.

There are often arguments and web fights here, what I do notice is that these disagreements never extend to events.

My advice is, dont be nervous, attend, introduce yourself, the guys will always be welcome, dont expect hugs and kisses on the first date, after a few events you will find yourself very much part of the event.

Fuzz mentioned a good example of Riyo, Ive only met him recently and he is now someone I would Definatley notice not being at an event. All because he made himself part of the events from his 1st one.

For someone who wishes for a forum community of yesteryear, these comments are telling too.

How many social events on the CT calendar have you attended in the last let's say two years?

As an events committee, we cannot possibly pander to the needs of every individual. We work on what the majority finds popular. Hence we cannot please everyone. Though, the thread is clear, whether you prefer spinning or prefer a concours d'elegance, if the passion for being a BMW Fanatic is enough, you'll make a concerted effort to attend all types of events with people that share a common interest which is BMW.

Not sure how many you've attended, but you're sadly mistaken.

How many guys here ventured into one of these events, not knowing anyone and met just one person?

There are new people at every event and all it takes is a hello/handshake and you're on your way. Or go stand in front of a BMW that you like for long enough and someone else will strike up a conversation.

I've attended all of 1 fanatics event with a BMW (and that was some time ago) and have never felt excluded, even if it meant i had to park off to one side because of no BMW. It hasnt put me off attending events and I/we try to get to as many as possible.

Yes i've made friends along the way but that included the odd awkward conversation.

You get out what you put in.

Arbee, do you have a rough estimate for Gerotek oval for a day? Out of interest

I dont have one for Gerotek as the last time i requested i was told the track isnt being hired out anymore to clubs and only to car manufactures or journo's.

Talrton is R80 000 for a day, excluding MSA.

Just going to point out the glaring difference of views between those who regularly attend events vs those who sit behind their PCs and come up with various (mostly untrue) hypotheses.

Attitude gents, that's what determines a lot around here.

This is true!!

But, we will use all the feedback and put together an event, hopefully we can change the perception around.

With an attitude like that I hope you don't face real customers. My opinion was asked for and I gave it. The correct course of action is for the fanatics managment to look at what has been said, weed out the BS and look if anything that has been said can lead to a solution. NOT fire straight back at the person telling them why the opinions that they were asked for are wrong. That's how Managment works! I have said my bit, and sure as hell didn't jump on here to have a fight.

@Arbee: Becuase these threads seem to get a lot of members quite fired up, and risk being derailed by emotive comments, maybe create a survey using a tool like SurveyMonkey, and survey the community to find out what kinds of events people would be likely to attend, and why they aren't attending the current ones. People can rant and rave to their hearts content, and it can be done confidentially, and management can then analyse teh results, learn, and make relevant changes to create the desired outcome.

Just a thought.

I would also like to see more events in Pretoria. I prefer a drag day as there is ample space and time for fanatics to have fun as well as socialise on the side. BMW vs Merc vs Audi sounds awesome. Thanks for ur concern Mr Arbee. U r a star

Howzit Guys

Hmmm a lot has been said here and we appreciate the feedback...

But from what I see, people have been harping on the ONE event they did attend which apparently made them decide not attend any future events afterwards. Well to me that simply doesn't work....

As Fuzz has said above, I started off on the forum fairly recently attending events. At my 1st event (dyno day) I did feel uncomfortable and only met 2 ppl from the forum, Arbee and Mike-R. This wasn't because ppl were perceived to be unwelcoming, it was ME who felt odd. But since I was passionate about the BMW brand and about this community we have, I didn't stop there, I continued attending events. Following event at the Concours Day I met atleast 15 to 20 guys who I had good chats with. I didn't have to SUCK UP to anyone, all I did was strike up a conversation and it flowed! Its not rocket science. Thereafter I just kept on meeting more and more members who have the same passion as I do, for the Brand and more over for the Fanatics community! You need to attend events to meet ppl!

From there it was noticed and I am now an Events Coordinator.

SO If that makes me a SUCK UP then heck, I and a whole lot more of the Fanatics who attend our events are!

Coming to the Ice Cream Meet / Midnight Run, whatever you feel, I can tell you this confidently that atleast 70% of the guys attended weren't Fanatics. How do I know this? I never saw them before and never saw them again!

In conclusion, you cant base your opinion on ONE event that you attended. Attend more events and you'll see its not as antisocial as you might think. Just ask those who attended Saturdays event....
