TheFanatics Event Feedback Thread

1) I can't afford an event further than 10km's from my home
2) I can't attend events except late Saturday's or Sundays

The "click" is/was very obvious

The fighting on the forum with certain members has also left a bitter taste in members mouths. and because those members are no longer active as much, and because they don't attend these events anymore, so have their followers also decided to not attend.

When I first attended my first Charity drive in Ladium, there were members there, that are no longer on the forum, and they had a strong comraderie following them
The second Massive charity drive, has also lost that member, and his group of friends
The Cars and Coffee was always well attended, and the style was informal, but this seems to have stopped now, a regular member at these events has also had a falling out on the forums, and so the politics of this has also had an effect on who attends

perosnally I am too embarrased (feel unwelcome) to attend any events, and I used to attend regularly before, and I don't have a car that is a "looker"/modified/souped up/fancy mags etc, just a stock standard E39, with a few door-dent-shopping-parking-rash, and apart from adding a face and a number to the attendance roll, I don't feel welcome.

Hey... I attend with my stock standard non fancy E39...

Just because you might have an older BMW, or a BMW thats not in concourse condition doesn't by any means mean you arent going to be welcome! We come together because we have a common love and passion for the brand! Lots of us Daily drive our cars and as such they have some battle scars. Thats the reality of having a daily driver... I look at the bonnet of my car and see the stone chips and I almost want to cry :(

Don't let that stop you guys, you ARE welcome!

:rollsmile::rollsmile::biglol::biglol:

I actually used to try and time my attendance based on ChefDJ and RAAAamstrong's attendance, so that there would be more than one E39

and on far too too many occasions, they would not "pitch" although they said they would attend, according to the attendance register, and I was the only E39 there.........so I gave up

I think we need a "Meet The Forum" event, based in all three major provinces, based purely on inviting the new guys to meet the older guys, with a strategy at the event to help the newer guys get around and introduce and meet some longer standing members.

There's no down side to this. All it will do is help everyone make friends :=):

1. Finding a suitable venue within 10km of your house/work is going to be a challenge. Knowing the events committee, some of them travel over 50km at a time to attend the events they setup. I know i have traveled many many KM's in the last two years to attend every event and when i could not afford it, i asked for a lift :)
2. Again, two of the guys in the GP events team run their own business', they have been closing shop early when events are on Saturdays. Even attend if the event is on a Sunday knowing its their only day with family.

My response is in no way targeting you at all, Ralf... In general, if someone is passionate they will make a plan to attend. Not saying you not passionate either. Just being general...

About the fighting, i would be bold and say that if one fought, for whatever reason, be the bigger person and attend an event wishing that the person you fought with is there so you can apologize and kindle the friendship. Its why, i have so many friends and so little enemies! The enemy list is slowly getting smaller too. Most of the people close to me, are friends from this forum... (from different cliques too)

Edit to Add: Embarrassed to attend in your car? Its a BMW, we love them all. Any color, shape, size and condition. I remember attending an event and another member saw a badge on my car discolored, he remembered he had a spare set at home and the next week we arranged and met to collect. See, made a new friend, got an item i needed...

From my side personally, I attended the Auto MC event was because I just happened to be within a reasonable distance and figured why not. I stay in Southern Suburbs, so that would have otherwise been an hour long drive one-way. Two hours just to get to and from an event is a lot. I know we go on drives that are further/longer than that sometimes, but those drives are on interesting routes :) I don't particularly enjoy dyno days, I find them a bit dry once the interesting cars have had a go, and would've put my 316 on purely as a joke. I think dyno days might put guys off because they don't exactly want to underwhelm the crowds there. I would've gone if I had R200 cash on me, but unfortunately did not.

Also I was wondering about the date of specially the AutoMC day. That time of the month is broke time for many people...

@ the guys claiming that they don't feel welcome:

This isn't BMWFanatics Speed Dating where we are responsible for introductions...

To put this into a deeper perspective, a lot, if not all of us have had to face the daunting task of attending an event and not knowing anyone - however, I think we've come out fine from that. I for one attended my first BMWFanatics event without knowing anyone there, but I think I survived it okay (that was in 2012).

Be real here, saying your attendance to a social event is prohibited by people not being social makes no sense at all. I've made a pile of friends from people that I've met for the first time at events.

Essentially, those who look for excuses will never get the ball rolling, others who are willing to pursue their passion will make every excuse to be there...

Edit:

A proposed pre-event meet and greet seems like a good idea at face-value, however, can you force a person to speak to someone else? Not really. Consider the logistical implications of suggestions.

I think this is a very good point. Maybe we should aim to have events at the beginning of the month?

But if we host an event first/last weekend of the month, they people cannot attend as they are busy doing monthly shopping etc...

I like attending car club events where you do something with the car. Track day\breakfast run etc. From the photos you guys post, those events are always a roaring success.

The trackday, albeit a strip-day more than a trackday was limited to a certain number of cars and by the time I saw registrations opened, it was sold out already and this even when the strip day was priced at the same price as a trackday.

Maybe do some research into what events the fanatics like to attend. Its kinda like the movies, we go there to watch awesome movies that we like. If they throw in a couple of bad movies inbetween the good movies, I dont feel obliged to go watch the bad movies just because I belong to the movie club.

Oh, just to add, you guys do an awesome job and I dont think you should take this personal!!!

Wholeheartedly agree with this.

I've been in a couple of car clubs over the years and a similar thing happened with the Opel guys. It's about the TYPE of events.

Exactly as MaX says, I want to do a track day, or a drag, or even a breakfast run.
Somewhere we can actually drive the cars, stretch their legs a bit more than in the daily grind. Dyno days also work, but seem to be too few and far between.

I have a family, as I'm sure a lot here do..
My wife will always join - she's a petrolhead as much as I - so that means arranging baby sitters for the kids.
I can't justify taking 6 hours away from spending it with my kids, to go and meet-up in a parking lot and take pics. There's also kids parties, other social events, so it becomes about managing time and prioritizing based on the WANT factor.

I was on the committee in the Opel Owner's Club - I know it's sometimes a thankless job and can be very disconcerting when member participation dwindles.

Right now, I'd love to do a Gerotek day. I've really missed those.
And then maybe a BMW vs Merc Tarlton day.
And then maybe a day at Z where we can actually get onto the track at a time that works with dropping kids off at grand-parents etc.
With some breakfast runs and dyno days in between.

Right now, it's incredibly easy to get 3 or 4 mates together and do a Tarlton Street2Strip night. Easy, done.
It's just as easy to go to a Z Trax Day.
It needs to be fun, involving the cars and with a bit more notice.

One of the most fun things we did in one of the other clubs, was get a police escourt through a small town to one of the events.. We literally all honned it, with the escourt.
I know days like that are gone, but think in that direction.

Cool, all concerns are being taking into account and we are going to bend over to make the next event a total success with more than a handful of fanatics...

Slow your roll there bud. I did say I tried talking to people. I would not complain if I didn't try and initiate conversations. At the midnight ice-cream meet I approached at least 4 different groups, and can count on one hand the number of words I got in response. Luckily Divio, Dewalt, Mike-R, and 1 more gentleman with a really neat turbo e36 (forgot his name) were approachable, otherwise the night would have been a complete bust for me.

I'm not in the country due to work but when I return I vow to attend every single WC event there is.

different strokes for different folks

I for one have a OLD "slow" cruiser BMW, and these type of events are exclusively for the (Australian description) - Hoonigans with M3's M2's etc, and I would feel totally ashamed and left out at these events.

I would much rather go to an official race at Kyalami and witness purpose built race machines and purpose trained race drivers show off their cars and talent, than witness normal every day daily drivers and every day daily cars, being purposely thrashed...to possible destruction.

OK I admit to being OLD in my thoughts

Also, econmics being what they are nowadays, I cannot "PERSONALLY" understand (note the personally portion) why anyone would want to, on purposely thrash and possibly damage their pride and joy.

For me the Cars and Coffee were perosnally the most relaxed get toegether, and the few members that brought their laptops to try and solve some issues for other members etc.

Yup, you cannot please all the people all the time
