In true Rat Rod fashion, parts are stolen/traded etc.

Replaced the useless existing 40 year old lights

With these bad boys!

A pint of beer for anyone who guesses where the new Hellas came from! it's a 2010 model off-road vehicle and were swiped from my mate Evan's vehicle. A perfect fit too!

Quick release grill buttons fitted. These are absolutely needed as the grill is on and off all the time.

On to wheels.

Originally I had planned to use these bad ass wheels

6x10J Ultralites with 165/70/10 Falkens

With a -3 offset they look bloody marvelous!

BUT! a mate of mine Peter McPhereson used to race Formula M in the 80's and ran these Monster 8x10J banded steelies. Peter and I went to visit Peter to look at his amazing Sharks in Ratex. He just happened to have the wheels in his loft since the 80's. Traded him a Shark bumper for them. Win!
The plan is space and band some existing smaller wheels (5j or 6j) for the front as they are too wide. The rear can stay at 8 inches.

im going to have the talk to Peter about this then...

Ask Peter to send you the video he sent me. That's the long term plan. Short term there will be an equally awesome plan, but less power.

The next job was to fit some period square mirrors on the driver's side, fender mirror is MGB I think, and new indicator lenses.

The mirrors? 10 minutes for fit including drilling. The indicator lenses? 2 hours!! Fiddly as F**K (Stars just for you Cois) a double layered rubber monstrosity and F****** STUPID! You'll notice in other pics the factory fitted clear indicator lenses with clear blubs. This results in a white light as an indicator and me nearly getting smashed into every time I turned right at a traffic circle. No orange dual filament bulbs available. Say it with me; F***** STUPID!!

Right, this brings us nearly up to date. Evan and I (Evan is also investing in Ratex) paid a trip to Metals Centre yesterday for some custom metal bits. This is our first Rat Rod build and we might do more depending how this one is received. Evan has a pimped out custom bad ass Jeep and so has good contacts in addition to mine. The build is racing ahead quickly and should be complete by January I hope.

Here's a teaser;

Looks awesome. In all the rat rod builds I've seen. They spray clear over the "patina"?

Yup, that's one way. It would entail flatting the car properly and we can't bothered. Even with all the rains we've had the rust streaks a little but has stayed on. I might flat it a little and then wax and polish it. we'll see.

How much has this build cost you. Including the free car if you were to pay for it?

I would really add a cage and harness to this list these cars are not safe... also a nicely painted cage will contrast nicely with the rough paint and give it more attitude :)
