The BMW 8 Series Is Back

mxjudozgarmwbnq1dy7z.jpg

During a BMW meeting today in Munich, the chairman of the BMW board Harald Krüger confirmed that the BMW 8 Series Coupe is slated for arrival in 2018. Today is a very good day.

Later this month, BMW will show us a design concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, which it says will give an “exclusive look” at the upcoming coupe. In the meantime, here’s a sketch that doesn’t really tell us much.

“The BMW 8 Series Coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our line-up—a slice of pure automotive fascination,” said Krüger. “The 8 Series Coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe.”

This news comes right after we learned that the 6 Series Coupe has been discontinued, leaving an executive coupe-shaped hole in the BMW lineup.

Rumors of the 8 Series’ return have been circling for years and it looks like it’s finally happening. BMW currently does not have a luxury flagship like Mercedes does and it’s about time the 8 Series changed that.

Only one car has borne the 8 Series mantle before—the big grand tourer built from 1989 to 1999 that famously came in V8 or V12 flavors. The original 8 was a technological powerhouse, but ultimately a failure in the marketplace, doomed by the rise of SUVs at the expense of coupes, its monstrous price tag and its complicated nature. In the years since it’s become coveted among enthusiasts willing to put up with its many quirks in exchange for its bold looks and power.

We’ll see if the new 8 Series can do it all better.

The 8-series and the A8 are not competitors though. The A8 competes with the 7-series and the S8 now competes with the M760Li.

Hmm should be interesting indeed... We probably might not see it here..

^^Server rebuild sounds like fun, app server/content server? Docker images work well depending on your needs. I use the EC2 Stack a lot and it works well :=):

So the Merc S-Class Coupe will have a proper BMW rival? Cos IMHO the 6-Series was the E-Class contender & the winner in my books, but the S-Class Coupe :praise:

Anyways, I'm anxious to see what BMW have planned for the new 8-Series

Next step should be a proper BMW supercar. We have all been waiting patiently :smashScreen:

I see it falls into the "Luxurious sports coupe" segment. If this is true, dont expect Supercar performance. :hammerhead:

Even if BMW has to make a proper supercar, they will probably go for a beefed up i8
hybrid type setup as apposed to a V10 (like the R8), which is regrettable.

It's going to be a boat...

I for one am split on this, as beautiful as the 6 is/was it was a large car and for a coupe too...

The word coming out of Munich is that the new 8 is going to be BMW biggest coupe, which probably means heaviest too

Bring back small, lightweight sporty coupe's pleeeease!!! Not these large heavy land yachts :(

I also read an article not too long ago, which confirms this.
however it does come at the cost of discontinuing the 6 series coupe...

For what it's worth, I always kind of thought the i8 was in part a throwback to the 8 series, and that's the direction they were going with it now. Guess I was wrong!

The former gen. 8 series was always a luxury coupe. It was basically the 2 door version of the E38. So this one will be big and will be luxurious. It's a different class to the 6-series. They just need to keep the 8-series a 2 door and not make gran coupes and GT's and whatever kak they are doing to other models.

The small sporty coupes are the Z-class.

Z1 Z3 were originally classified as roadsters.... now the 3 is the size of previous gen 5's etc etc

Bring back the 3 series coupe and tourings!

(and kill these fwd things they're producing ... and the gt too)
