Swirl Flaps

Here is a photo of one of the flaps. If you look carefully you'll see a small portion of the metal flap is bent at a 90-degree angle at the edges. This is all that stops the spindle from sliding out.

Just a stupid question; does the removal of the SF make any difference to the performance at all? What is their function? :dunno:

It makes no difference to the performance at all.

The function is to lengthen the airway (and induce swirl) at part load and idle. This reduces emissions and improves driveability at low engine speeds. I would say the main reason, given its European heritage, would be emissions. I don't see any difference at all.

As far as I can determine, driveability has improved now that the flaps are out. There was a very irritating point around 1700rpm that you had to avoid in lower gears. At 1700rpm a sort of jerking would occur, either caused by the flaps opening or some sort of changover in mapping, or a combination thereof. But I might be wrong about this, you know, I might find this improvement because I'm looking for it.

Can you measure the difference in fuel consumption for us, Plonk?

I'll check over the next month or so. The fuel consumption should only be higher at idle though, where the swirl flaps actually made some kind of difference. But I have to tell you this claim makes no sense to me, since the engine management doesn't "know" that the flaps are gone.

My trip to work is 5km from my house to the R44 (stop go, where this should make a difference) and 13km at 100km/h for the rest of the way (where there will be no difference in theory), so I doubt this is measurable. But if I notice anything untoward I will be sure to let you know.

Seems this BB can't do a simple smiley... so here it is :)
