State of exhaust tips..

I have been noticing, more and more, that on the turbo model BMWs the majority of them are rolling with filthy burnt exhaust tips.. Is this pure laziness on the part of their owners or is having disgustingly dirty and burnt exhaust tips the in thing to have nowadays?

Here's mine, week in week out.. It takes less than 10 seconds to clean it weekly so I don't get it?

Why would you want this to be all burnt to a crisp?

I guess the average driver does not care.. Fanatics must care!

If you leave that soot on there and never clean it I guess it will cake on almost like mags do too and that is what (to me) looks burnt I guess.. :thumbdo:

On my audi, i had t remove the tips and soak them for an hour to be abke to remove the soot. Its pure lazyness. If you dont clean them often, they stain like that and it becomes a moer of a pain to clean. Just a simple wipe once a week keeps them tip top

mine are hidden underneath the car, and no chrome to polish, but I do try to remove any black exhaust soot evidence

I appreciate that, i always hate having dirty tail-pieces...especially if you have nice chrome ones. Even when i had the droppy piece, a clean one still finished off the car.

I find a lot of lazy owners around now recently, times have changed. Less people have the appreciation for these machines than before...

Sad reality...

both my cars E39 and E38, the exhaust tips are curved drop down, but are totally hidden behind the bodywork and not vizible unless the car is on a lift, not like the more modern cars that have a pre-formed cut out in the bodywork and then still have the curved droppy type.

What's the best product to clean them? I fitted the MPerf exhaust and the inside gets cleaned when I wash the car, but they just not as clean as when they were new.

Lazy owners. Bought my M5 with horrible looking exhaust tips but had them improved in short order with some elbow grease and Meguiars NXT metal polish. Maintained them since improving them over time (was bad enough that it wasn't 100% first time round. Will post some pics of what they look like now if this thread is still alive in the week LOL. It really doesn't take much effort to keep them looking good.

Yeah with those types hidden behind the bumper, they need a clean too but not as much as the ones that show. Mine being he diesel still showed and even though droopy, still a lil dust made a huge difference in its appearance.

Im guessing the OCD speaks when i refer to still cleaning the ones that are hidden...each owner o his own lol

So the Meguiars NXT Metal Poilsh, can it also be used on Nudgebars? My Prado's Nudgebar is all faded and looking 10 times older than the car. It's manufactured by a different manufacturer to the Hilux and Fortuner's nudgebar manufacturer yet those stay nice and shiney.

Thanx

Good to see people appreciate their cars!! I climb in under the car and clean the rear box, suspension parts, diff whatever I can reach basically... People think I am nuts.. But I love my car, feel so privileged to drive one so yes I guess I am a fanatic..

I don't polish the tips, I use a microfiber once a week with a separate bucket that I use on the wheels and then I clean the tips last. Same Sonax Gloss I use the car. The inside of the tips.. Yeah that is another story.. I clean them but they stay dirty. As long as the chrome is shiny I am happy! :cartel:

Everyone tells me I need to get that ///M exhaust for mine too.. Let's see.. :=):

it is pure owner laziness as well as if the car is taken to a car wash, laziness on their side ..

dont know how u can wash a car and leave the tail pipe/pipes is a dirty state .. its like not wiping the car between the door pillars .... :hammerhead:

i use Autosol and have had no problems with it cleaning the soot off .. apply, rub in, leave for around 10 mins and wipe off with clean cloth ..

i think a really clean car is represented by the following(over and above the normal)....
clean exhaust tips

clean wheel wells

clean inner wheels

clean visible suspension and under carriage.., am still working getting mine there.

but thats just me....

I also try and keep the tips clean whenever I can, spending at least 3 to 5 minutes cleaning the tips alone after the rest of the car is done. I manage to keep the chrome outside spotless whenever washing the car but the insides... Eish. Startup after a wash and they're already filthy. A week later that buildup is just unimaginable after the downpipe. It has stained a bit to the point I can't get the insides 100% clean anymore, which pee's me off somewhat.

I think I need an old Wheel Woolie and some chrome polish...

I've tried cleaning the exhaust on my dad's F30, its so bad that there's a residue on the exhaust that refuses to come off. Luckily mine is always clean
