Squeaking sound in the mornings?

Hello Guys

I am hoping someone can point out to me if I need to take my car in to be checked at the dealers. In the mornings when I start the car and I reverse it out of the garage, it has a squeaking sound....like a small belt spinning against something sound. Bearing in mind when I reverse out of the garage I have to turn to the right on a slight incline and this is when I can hear this squeaky sound. It only happens in the mornings. When I leave work in the afternoons, that sound isn't present. The only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with the sharp turn I have to do in the mornings when the car is cold.

This car is less than 4 months old and I am not sure if I need to be concerned.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Might just be your power steering pump belt that not tight enough. Sometimes the belts just squeak for the hell of it. Have someone check the tension of the belts :thumb:

Well, don't do what some idiot I knew was convinced would "solve" the squeaking belt noise - squirt some oil onto the pulley and belt surface, problem solved! :roflol:

As said, belt probably just needs to be slightly tightened up.

Also, check if it does it with the aircon switched either on or off...

I have learnt with the Smart to turn the aircon off else I get the same squeal, however drive a few metres and turn it on and nothing.

I will try this tomorrow morning. Generally don't turn my aircon off. But definitely worth trying.

Good tip Mike! I always switch off my aircon before switching a vehicle off, otherwise the next time the car is started the aircon comes on immediately which is not ideal.

Common problem....check the pulleys, they wear out. Had the same problem 3 weeks ago!!! Goodluck buddy.

Well, it is a common problem, but I assume that this is a 2012 E90 so I doubt due to the age that this is the case - had to replace the pre-tensioners on my Wife's E46 for this very reason...

Hello

Recorded the very noticeable squeaking sound when I started my car this morning and went to the dealer I bought it from. Played the sound clip to the mechanic and had him check under the bonnet since there was no sound when I started the car at the dealers. Mechanic says that this is a common problem with a particular batch of cars they had....really now??....apparently a letter was supposed to be sent out to get all owners to come replace the belt just in front of the engine as it is a known problem. Something about the material used isn't top notch and the newer belt is better. They already have the replacement belt ready for me but I need to let them keep it overnight so as to hear it from themselves in the morning, as the sound is most noticeable when the car is started from a cold state. Oh the inconvenience!!!!

At least I have been reassured that I can continue driving the car without any problems. So I have to make plans to take the car in next week.

Another interesting thing....mechanic says there is only ONE belt under that bonnet...really....only one? My knowledge of the internal workings of a car is extremely limited but I'm sure other cars I've had had more than only one 'belt'.

Hope this info helps anyone else that has this problem.
Cheers.

Booked in the car yesterday afternoon, so as to allow the service to happen this morning. Got call from dealership just now and they have confirmed the V-belt is to be replaced. Will be getting the car back this afternoon. I'm hoping I don't hear this noise when I start the car tomorrow morning!

On the upside, the standard checks will be done to the vehicle, so that I can have some assurance no problems will occur when we visit Mpumalanga this Easter weekend!

Cheers.
