Sort of new to BMW and should have gone for VW!

Hi Everyone,
Thank you for the advice.
I'm sure it is l/100km. I'll post a pic later. I've been to two different dealerships.
Does somebody know the contact details of the right person/department at BMW SA? Maybe I will get beter help?

I've tried Engen 95-the same, Shell 95-a bit beter (13,5l/100km)
Total -the same,Caltex the same. Sasol i have to drive about 15km to fill up???

Agreed something is very very wrong then... I don't even get that on my old car when I drive the crap out of it..

So I would take it up with the dealer principle and from there also post on their FB page and also get hold of someone at BMW SA.. I can remember there were details posted of a contact at BMW SA but for the life of me can't remember which post.

Hope you get this sorted asap.

your car is broken. msm gave good advice. thats what i would follow. dont leave it!

I would suggest the following. Ask the dealer if they have a demo car with the same engine.

Reset the OBC and take both cars for a test drive on the same route driving in a similar manner (where you can). If the difference is huge, insist that they sort it out and give you a loaner, else you post your consumption figures on BMW's Facebook site.

BMW dealers are getting flippen useless. Unless you point out a problem or threaten them, the incompetence levels seem to be getting worse.

i drive in traffic all the time with a 135i and i dont get that.

I drive an old 540i, 4.0L V8, and my average is on 16.8L/100km just driving around town and sitting in traffic.

Something is obviously wrong and IMO it seems you were sold a broken car which they can't even fix. Demand a new one.

Yoh... Thats R2 a km... Thats very high. I get R1.50 a km in my M3. That's not right bro.

with R400 (half tank/30litres) I can do around 225km. Semi Highway, mostly urban with some spirited runs here and there, but mostly calm driving.

My wife has the F30 320i 8 spd Auto. She sits in traffic all day and drives it pretty hard. She is getting 10.2 L/100, and I thought hers was bad. Must be something wrong.

My wife's F30 320iA gets 10l/100km on average for her daily peak hour commute of 18kms and has just ticked over 10000kms. Its still a bit high for me but way better than what you getting.

yoh that is quite high, in traffic i get 16L/100km in the M3, that too 25kms a day if i used it in the week. highway around 10L or less.

Have you calculated the consumption manually though? It may just be faulty electronics. Zero your trip meter. Fill your tank until the pump stops automatically; drive until say half a tank; fill again until the auto-stop and record your kms. then just do the math and check whether it's actually 15L/100kms.

At 15km per day,urban use only, you are bound to get a very high consumption, seeing that most probably you'll be using it on a cold engine only, when fuel consumption is at it's highest.

I bought a 320i (E90) and it used about 14.5 l/100km. The problem was that the car never got hot enough. The E90's operating temperature is very high at 120 Celsius (if I remember correctly), so it takes quite a while to get there. When the car was warm, it could get 10.3 quite consistently.

I lasted 7 months. Bought a 320d. Now it's down to 9.5 l/100km. 5 better per 100, 700km minimum per month, 35 litres per month, R473 per month less on fuel (@ R13.50 per litre).

Your engine could be heating up too slowly due to a faulty thermostat. Perhaps you could ask BMW about that?

15km should be enough to get to operating temperature. My work route is around 18 km's and at around the 12/13km mark all my cars are up to temperature. Even the M5's oil is up to +-90 degrees and that lump of iron takes forever to warm up.

I travel 7.8kms to work, and even in winter my car is up to temp before I'm halfway there, and I do only city driving.
Its only when I put the heater on that the temp will stay low because its using the engine temp to warm the cabin.

Not sure where I read it (and it was 7 months ago). Doing a bit of a search and it appears 110 C isn't hot enough to switch on the fan while driving. Looks like operating temp is 90-110. And idle OT is about 92-95 C. 320i F30 is completely different engine, but it's still petrol 2l I4 moving about 1500kg.

But those facts are irrelevant. The point is that if the car isn't running at operating temperature, then it's going to be very inefficient. If the tyres are pumped properly and there are no hills between home and work, then the cause of high fuel consumption could be that the car takes too long to get to operating temp. This could be caused by a faulty thermostat.

Also the OP only drives 7.5km per trip (assuming a drive to work and back), so maybe 14.1 is normal?

:idea: ok how many kms do you get out of a full tank of fuel ?? or do you only every put in R100 at a time ?
