Soon to be E34 M5 owner

Hi guys, awesome forum you have here and with a wealth of knowledge it seems. I'm Graham / 200 Octane. The username comes from my love for Nissan 200STi/Gxi. I've always been a BMW fan since the E36 M3 days and still wouldn't mind getting my hands on one. My friend has a early 90's E34 BMW M5 which might become mine very soon. The car has been neglected for as long as we know each other as he has a daily runner. For 3+ years, it hasn't driven due to a faulty fuel pump and coilpack and immediately after that was repaired, some desperate characters stole a part of the loom which has now led to him losing all interest.

I must confess that I would never had imagined owning this model BMW due to size but the more I look at it, the more i'm falling for it. I do like classics... regardless of brands.

It will be the first BMW I own and my reason has always been not wanting to settle for anything less than the M3 that I fell in love with.

At the moment, on the cards for a potential future ride, is a F30 316/318 for my wife or 120d/135i for myself. Time will tell I guess.

Some of my old rides;
2010 Golf 6 GTi
2007 Golf 5 GTi
2008 Corsa OPC
2007 Audi A4 2.0T
2007 Opel Astra Convertible
5x STi/GXi's

Congrats and welcome bud!
Whereabouts are you from?

There is a wealth of knowledge on the s38b36 engine on here, so pick some brains.
Before you even run that motor, please do yourself a favour and check it out thoroughly!!!
The cam-chain tensioner is a BIG part that fails over time, the e36 M3 3.2 variant is a straight swap and easily attainable at the agents.
It cost me an engine rebuild at a very pretty penny at one stage. At that time, nearly 10 years ago, valves alone were +-R1,6k a piece.......it's a 24 valve. :eek:mgwaiting:

Keep us posted!
We want pics!

Welcome, hope you get sorted with the rides, and please do share if it happens.
Definitely the right place for info on any given BMW. Enjoy your stay.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I am from Bellville, Cape Town.

Before starting, I will definitely do an engine clean up and drain and top-up with fresh oil, coolant and gearbox oil depending on how challenging the task is.

Mind you, my friend was never cheap on maintenance and doesn't mind coughing where necessary, just think he outgrew it. The engine bay is rather spotless considering how longs it's been out of service

I actually know a BMW mechanic with years of service behind him. I'll probably ask him to give it a check when ready to start up.

The wiring does bug me a bit though.

Is the car Diamond black with a light silver grey interior by any chance?:fencelook:

This going to sound a bit weird but I'm not entirely sure. I only saw it once and didn't inspect it as a potential future owner.

If I recall correctly, the car is a dark-ish blue with white/cream interior.

Thinking it's maybe your old car?

Will be interesting to see the car you mentioned Graham, I used to own one as well a few years back. I'm in your neighbourhood as well.

So I know this has taken quite long but I got a very cool birthday present from my friend yesterday. He blessed me with the E34 M5.

I'll download tapatalk now and try to upload the photo I have.

Awesome! These are amazing cars, you will fall in love so quickly...I have a M5 shell that I am going to scrap soon, so let me know if there are some wiring loom pieces you need etc.
