Smokey E87 120D

Hi All

Just a question, I recently got a E87 120D and realized that with my foot to the metal it creates a noticeable amount of black cloud behind me. Which yes I would figure is normal but then realized other E90s and E87s don’t smoke as much as mine does on moderate acceleration.

This only happens when I would pull off quicker and the turbo kicks in, or when I pull off on a gear I wasn’t supposed to be on and run a bit out of power (second gear traffic pull off).

Now I have heard of cars with dpf, which I figure help reduce black smoke and wondering do I have and does it get dirty to a point I puff often?

PS. I recently serviced the car (oil and filter change, air filter change and used Liqui Moly Super Diesel additive)

but why dont I see this in other E90s and E87s?

Even VW POLO TDIs dont create the ninja bomb

Should have seen my 320d after I fitted the straight pipes. Used to love flooring it when pulling away from a roadblock. :rollsmile:

If the car is healthy and has a dpf it should not smoke at least to the point you can see smoke in the rear view.

Previous owner may have removed the dpf or cut out the internals. Or there's something else wrong with the car.

Sounds like a boost leak, black smoke = unburnt fuel

Congrats on the car
smoke when accelerating hard on any diesel is normal, however
i recently had on my 2005 E90 320d ,the oil breather valve replaced,
Why ; my car was loosing oil , under power, & left a huge ball of black smoke when accelerating hard
I assume you don't have the car long
i would suggest you monitor your oil usage cause the breather valve doesn't just leak & you'll see the oil laying on the floor it pushes the oil into the system creating the black smoke

By the way after i sorted the valve out no more black smoke so to say

Maf or Map or temp sensor either one of them could cause that.

Hi Gents,

Well I asked a friend of mine to drive behind me as I try unleash the ninja bomb and I drive behind him as he unleashes the ninja bomb as well in my car, and we came to the conclusion that I was seeing things as it’s a puff of smoke and not as I imagined.

:thumbdo:BUT I noticed as I opened the hood, the “turbo pipe” I think it is underneath the airfilter cover, ribbed pipe has oil residue this I am sure is a problem? :blueCry:

The pipe i am referring that is covered in oil residue is below, and would it be a mission to replace the breather filter?

My breather filter from bmw was plus minus R1,400 excluding labor
came to R2000 all in all
Was done by Reynolds BMW in cape town

The oil on that pipe is normal sweating any diesel with over 80 000km has that build up. I actually hate the boost pipe setup on the Bmw's because of those stupid clips. Remove the intercooler, boost pipes and sensors and give them all a good clean.im not sure if you have the lci engine or not. If you have the lci engine i believe the oil breather was done away with. If you have the Pre Lci then the oil breather can be replaced, speak to Gert from OBD Worx, he supplies oem replacement for it:coolShake:

:biglol: I wish I was the DIY kind of guy, but maybe my mate can help out in this regard of cleaning the intercooler and boost pipe.

I have a lci N47 engine and am glad to hear its normal to have some residue on this pipe.
