single vanos bolt

Hi all.

I am really battling with BMW on this issue.

Recently I bought a 1997 E36 323 auto (non runner) for a pretty good price.

The motor was poked so I am busy rebuilding it.

Now the problem...
In the vanos unit there is a left hand threaded bolt that secures the vanos 'piston' to the cam 'cup'

the bolt was broken off in the vanos unit when I stripped the motor so I ordered a new bolt from the dealers (a whopping R21.52) now I have realized its the incorrect bolt as its only 15mm long and the old bolt is 25mm long.

When I contacted the agents and spoke to them they told me that all the vanos bolts are exactly the same

I have searched the web with no luck, I cannot even find suppliers of left hand threaded bolts...

The bolt they supplied me is from the double vanos motor as I have stripped a double vanos unit I have lying around and compared the bolts.
I cannot find any listing at all for the longer bolt from the single vanos unit...

I need this bolt urgently so if any of you have 1 available perhaps from a damaged unit please contact me so we can try make some sort of a deal...

Below is the single vanos bolt which is the bolt I currently require

Below is the double vanos bolt that I bought from the agents

Thanx guys!

I inderstand there is a place on CT that will cut the right size/tupe bolt for you. Not sure about GP.

Double check your part no on realoem.com, i replaced most hex bolts while i was rebuilding my m50. Some bolts didn't match agent system though. Do you have the part no or is it a hex type bolt?

BMW does not sell this bolt thats why there is no part number... I can import a Bolt from Biesan at R 58 each (they do not normally sell these but keep a few just incase)... but it will take some time to get here and is rather expensive...

Hi RS,

Give Hammon Fasterners a call. Located in Boksburg...they can source left hand threaded bolts...1-2 days waiting. Telephone Number: 011 914 4055

Give them a try, if not I know of a place in Isando that manufactures bolts to spec, no specific amount, so if you dont come right with Hammon, give us a shout and we can try source other suppliers.

thanx for all the help guys.:bravo::ty:

@ jay - i gave them a call and was told they dont stock left hand threaded bolts...

i think the best solution will be to get the bolts from Biesan as this is going to be a disaster for the guys running single vanos as these bolts tend to shear off when loosened.:flyfun:

@ sean - would you be able to order 1 for me please? and how long does it take for delivery normally?

Thats strange bud,

I gave them a call before i posted the number to confirm. :nonono:

They specified that they would be able to supply it. Goes to show...some people dont know how to do their jobs, or dont know what they doing in their jobs.

Sorry bud, still confused as to why they would say yes to the one, and no to the other...:flyfun:

Hope you come right then!
