Should I keep my 330d?

I've got a 2013 F30 330d. It's specced pretty nicely - Alpine White/Black interior, M-sport, Professional Nav, 8 speed sports auto, etc. I've been looking around for a replacement. I was massively impressed by the M135i and M235i (I used to drive an E90 335i). Especially the sound was intoxicating compared to my current tractor.

The main problem is the price the dealers are willing give me for my 330d. It's actually insulting what they are willing to pay. The car is on 92,000km, but it's genuinely in showroom condition. Even the mags don't have a scratch on them.

Because of this I'm considering driving the 330d for a couple more years, obviously going over 100k km's and losing the motorplan. Extending is not an option as it's crazy expensive.

So what do you guys think? From what I read it seems the 330d's are pretty bulletproof and I shouldn't have any reliability issues. I have no real reason to buy something else except for the peace of mind of a motorplan (pretty negligeble actually) and the amazing sound of a BMW petrol straight six.

Also, if I choose to keep it, anything specific I should tell the dealer when it goes in for its last motorplan service in 3000km?

Here's some pics, because reasons:

Because I like petrol cars with turbos id say sell it privately and buy the M235i but that's just me.

Diesels are good cars but I just can't get over the sounds of the engine, it was just something I could never really enjoy, but they are damn fast and very nice to drive and some of them actually don't sound bad at full tilt with a downpipe and a few other bits and bobs done to the exhaust.

However....you have owned a 335i in the past and you know the feeling, the diesel is pure torque and great to drive around town with and long trips but nothing beats that feeling and sound that the straight 6 makes when those turbos spool up and boost all the way through the rev range hence the reason your even considering this.

Go with what your heart is telling you to do.

On the motorplan side of things....I have looked into the prices for parts for those cars and I would be very weary of that, maybe just do some research into this before you make your decision, Goto BMW and price a new turbo and a new gearbox, waterpump and things like that. big ticket items.

For instance N54 set of turbos only costs R13 700 for the set if you give them your old turbos, but to have them fitted the bill comes to 39k.

So all I am saying without trying to sound negative is just do a little research into what parts generally fail and how much they cost to replace and fit.

Try to find someone who has a decent freeflow exhaust on a 330d to listen to - they sound pretty good without or smallish silencers. My (ex) E90 330d used to have a freeflow which had a nice deep growl.

Hate to be a party pooper on the 1/235i, but remember that some of that sound is artificially created.

I'd say keep the 330d, mod it after MP and have some fun that way. Not a replacement for a petrol 6, but a close 2nd when modded properly.

You have an amazing car there dude! I say keep it to be honest :)

Thanks! Yeah it is probably the best car I've ever owned, in most ways way better than the E90 335i :)

You see that's the problem, my heart is telling me I need a petrol straight six but my wallet is saying it's just too expensive! I've been doing some research and it seems the parts for the 330d aren't that bad.

I did put it on Auto Trader for what I thought was a good price, but didn't get any response :(

Good point, I listened to the RKMotion 330d posted on this forum and sounded pretty awesome. And of course, after motorplan there's so many options...

Your car is super clean

I had the same issue, my heart said buy an M3 but my pocket said haikona :dunnoanymore:

Trade in values are ridiculous, I would suggest you try to sell privately.

Also if you keep the 330d, put an exhaust and DP and hear the sound,
And also look into getting an aftermarket warranty that will cover you for like 70% of the costs if anything breaks,

I would not even consider a x35i over your 330d. The F30 with sport auto just makes the 30d motor feel so much better.

On the X35i you’ll have terrible consumption in comparison to the X30d for a better exhaust note - to me this isn’t a great trade off.

In most driving conditions the 330d will almost as quick as and X35i as well (apart from a proper TLGP drag race of course)

As mentioned above - go for a DP and SW and watch your car transform.

Keep it the best car is a paid up car, yes you miss the 335i power but honestly the diesel is the best of both worlds

Link to auto trader ad?

I think your arse is just itching, if you are truly looking for a petrol again, keep the 330d as a daily and get a weekend car.

Down pipe zhorst and software... Will laugh at a 135 after that!

Check the gearbox at Zf before motor plan expires in my opinion... Could get a nice service on it before motor plan is up if it needs it.

Definitely keep the 330d.... long term you won't be unhappy. I'm on 217k km on my 2013 X3 and no issues. By all accounts the 30d motor is an even safer bet long term.

Keep the car, yes trade in values are low. I know... Mod it and give the x35s a go! Yes the sounds of the N55/B58 are awesome but at what cost.

Buy a E92 335i as a weekend car... my 2c

Beautiful car you got there, I would keep it and throw in some RK Sauce to make it even more insane when the plan is gone.

Had the same chat with a buddy he wanted to move from a GTi to an R. SO I asked him the following:

Do you do any legal drag racing?

Do you take part in track days?

Do you really need the extra power?

What is the R going to do that the GTi is not doing right now?

At the end of the day power is very addictive and you always want more. People even tune Lambos to get that extra vroom. He ended up getting the R anyways because YOLO.

Now to contradict myself.... If you have decided that you want a x35i then the D is never going to be enough. You will slowly start finding faults with it and the eventually it becomes a nuisance and you get rid of it.
