August 24th is the big day that my 7er will be going for:

* Valve stem seals
* Head gaskets
* Oil filter
* Oil change

If they need to machine the heads then that will be done too.

Total cost comes in just over R9700.00 (excluding any machining).

You make it sound like this is the first time you are changing the oil and filter

It's the first time since I got her. Was done just before I took delivery of the car, and I have covered just over 12000km. The big deal is the valve stem seals...

Sounds like a good deal. For interest's sake I got a parts quote for 4xbrake discs, pads all round and sensors from SMG Durban for my e90 320i and that was R9805. For the work involved on your car I say its a good deal.

and about 15 vacuum pipes that are going to break as soon as you touch them due to age and heat.

If you have the budget,

I would advise, while you are there, upper radiator, lower radiator, and a close inspection of all pipes.

Do waterpump and thermostat and belts as well.

While all belts are loose, check for any noise on any of the pensioner pulleys and replace those.

That is, if you can spare the cash,

I still hold the view, that I have held for the last 10 years, on a BMW, if you keep it in oil and water, and the cooling systems are good, they will last forever, well past 500,000km

The pulley will be replaced too, and I am pretty sure that there is a leak on the lower radiator hoses so they will check that too. Either way I am not expecting it to be cut and dried at R10k :)

And yes, this is BMW dealer prices.

What's the cars mileage ?

I assume it's consuming oil, hence the need for new valve stem seals?

Just turned over 160k. Oil consumption and smoking at idle (after a while or in peak traffic).

Have you checked your oil separator diaphragms, they might have tears which could also be the cause of the smoking. Murphy's law however will ensure that it's the more expensive fix (stem seals).... :(

Lol first things I check on any V8 bmw are the diaphragms. Mine are practically new. This is just classic valve stem seals and then BMW SA has the nerve to tell me that they are unaware of any such issues on the N62 engine.

Lol you get a million hits on Google just typing N62 valve stem seals! Interestingly though it's the US that appears to be hardest hit. On UK forums concern is more around the ZF box, MPGs, and the inexplicable shimmy at 80-100 kph.
Anyways I've got the same issue, just in denial.............

Pocket change for those guys who have those carbon ceramic brakes (If that's what its called) I went to SMG to buy a new temp sensor for the E30 and overheard a phone call , guy called in asking for brake disks for his X6M or something like that , and they quoted him around R50 000 per disk!
I was shocked .

Back on topic! @Hugo_za good luck !! I know how you must feel! Don't worry shes gonna be awesome when you get her back! No more smoke hehe

Is that the cost from a BMW dealer? Very reasonable, if so.

So a little update. BMW clearly does not tell you the whole story when it comes to valve stem seals. The labor they charge is basically taking the heads apart and putting them back together. After they do this, the heads get sent away to be machined and coated etc...all at additional cost. All in all the cost comes in closer to R30k (in my case) plus you are without a car for roughly 3 to 4 weeks.

Costs aside I cannot really be without a car for that long right now, so I decided to forego the valve stem seals until I go on holiday later this year. I did the oil service and the car runs like a dream. Oil consumption is in check, and she really only smokes if I sit idling for more than 15 minutes.

Hugo_za, what is your oil consumption?

My X5 with N62B48 engine at 206000km consumes around 1 liter per 5000km, and it very rarely makes a little puff after sitting idling for an extended time (10min or more) and then only when the car is sitting on a downslope.

I much prefer the cost of a liter of oil (R90) every 5000km to the cost of replacing the valve stem seals.

Good point bud. The oil consumption really isn't that bad, probably same as yours, maybe a little bit more frequent. I do think that the oil level sensor might be on the blink so will replace that next. I can "cure" the smoking by adding some additives to the oil, but it comes at the cost of performance and higher fuel consumption.

Oh and I also want to add that BMW wanted to charge me R3k for the oil service. I laughed at the lady...
