You make it sound like this is the first time you are changing the oil and filterHugo_za said:August 24th is the big day that my 7er will be going for:
* Valve stem seals
* Head gaskets
* Oil filter
* Oil change
If they need to machine the heads then that will be done too.
Total cost comes in just over R9700.00 (excluding any machining).

If you have the budget,
I would advise, while you are there, upper radiator, lower radiator, and a close inspection of all pipes.
Do waterpump and thermostat and belts as well.
While all belts are loose, check for any noise on any of the pensioner pulleys and replace those.
That is, if you can spare the cash,
I still hold the view, that I have held for the last 10 years, on a BMW, if you keep it in oil and water, and the cooling systems are good, they will last forever, well past 500,000km

I assume it's consuming oil, hence the need for new valve stem seals?

Lol first things I check on any V8 bmw are the diaphragms. Mine are practically new. This is just classic valve stem seals and then BMW SA has the nerve to tell me that they are unaware of any such issues on the N62 engine.

Blue Shirt said:Hugo_za, what is your oil consumption?
My X5 with N62B48 engine at 206000km consumes around 1 liter per 5000km, and it very rarely makes a little puff after sitting idling for an extended time (10min or more) and then only when the car is sitting on a downslope.
I much prefer the cost of a liter of oil (R90) every 5000km to the cost of replacing the valve stem seals.
