Seafoam or alternative?

Hi Guys

As the title suggests, I'm looking for info on Seafoam and it's alternatives.
Has anybody used this on their car, have heard great things, but also some horror stories.

I have a feeling my engine is very dirty and would like to clean it out before I get started on some mechanical work ?(major service, tappet cover gasket, head gasket, etc). Seafoam sounds like exactly what I need, but after reading some of the horror stories, I want to hear what you guys think.

If not seafoam, what else can I use to clean the sludge and gunk from my engine? I can see lots of crusty crap under my oil cap, don't want to know what the rest of the internals look like. :yuck:

oil sludge and carbon deposits are completely different things what are you trying to achieve?

PS NTF will i put seafoam in an engine...

You need to flush your motor. A bottle of engine flush, run the motor for five or ten minutes, drain and replace with new oil and filter.

I basically want to clean out the engine, be it carbon deposits, gunk, sludge, whatever. What to get this car back to tip top condition.

Which oil would you suggest?
I'm currently using Castrol GTX high mileage (car has over 340,000km). What's the best oil for cleaning the engine?

Carbon deposits are unrelated to sludge/gunk FYI

Sludgy/Gunky Oil : Flush your motor
Carbon Build up : PM George Smooth. He does not have a CT branch yet though. Alternative is to strip off the cylinder head and have it cleaned manually.

I dont like Castrol at all it seems sludge up real easy...

I use Liquimoly exclusively in my cars as it is a very good oil...

Driving a E36 328i.
Previously owner says he's been using Castrol GTX for the last few oil changes, which looks like they have been few and far between.

Will look into the liqui-moly product. Which one would you suggest for my car? Do they come in 5lt? Only see 1lt bottles on the site.

While I have your attention, what oils/fluids would you suggest for diff, gearbox and brakes? Have no idea when last those have been changed. Want to get that sorted as well.

for the engine I would recommend:
Top Tec 4100 5W-40 R 420 5l (you need about 7l)

for gearbox:
Top Tec ATF 1100 R 100 1L (you need two bottles)

for Diff:
(GL5)LS SAE 75 W-140 R 440 1L (you need two bottles)
