S55 crank bolt issue

Gents.

I came across a video on YouTube where the guy tore down a S55 motor due to the crank bolt coming out.

Google also pulls up quite a few.

Has anyone experienced it? Is there a recall or something?

i have seen a bit of it online with aftermarket offerings to correct it as well..people scared to mod them..nothing here though..think one gent mentioned that he had the issue but thats about it. No recall as far as i know

There doesnt seem to be such a hype about it yet I think.
Maybe in time to come?

Guy on a FS thread will say " bolt fixed or something " just like NA M cars and bearings.

ja i think once guys have to pay for it out of motorplan you'll start hearing about it. To me if an item like that fails on 500 cars even..its an issue.

2 i know of. BMW should offer a recall or an upgraded part.

Apparently even the upgrade ( offered by various aftermarket co) is not foolproof. Especially if you’re modded.
In any event, no engine is foolproof. My 13 modded Revo GTI 7 broke a piston at 30000km. Cost me a bunch. And those engines are apparently bulletproof.

So just to be clear, BMW manufactured the s55 with a closed deck design for strength and reliability over the N55 but then they install dissolving crank bolts that destroy the engine anyway. It's like they design weak points into every modern S derived engine...the S14, S38, s50b30 didn't have any of these weaknesses, just goes to show they now design them to fail.

S58 I think is built as a single piece on the crank. But timing chain sits towards the firewall side same as B58.

Bit of a revival all, for obvious reasons I am researching this  :fencelook: ...

I am not in the M Community too much so don't know of a local car that spun it myself.. Seems like a terrible thing to happen.. My N55 has the same design, but its power is Obviously much lower, so doubt something could happen. Has anyone done this locally on a S55 as a preventative item?

Thanks for the link @"individj" - looks like an extensive build on that 135i, will have a look.
Perhaps an assumption on my side, but perhaps not wrong that the guys running mods on these are doing so with the stock hub, no joke to replace this from all I have read and seen..

Rennzport offers a solution for this. It is an issue on S55s, both stock but moreso on modded ones.
