Runflats and a 120i

What type of mileage do you guys get with runflats? My wife's 120i is pretty heavy on tyres, especially front tyres.....she's been told 'it is normal'.......wheel alignment has been checked by BMW.....

Got about 40k on Bridgestones and 30-35k on Khumos with a E90 320d...

My 135 had Dunlops & i got 35k on them. My wife's 125 had Continentals and she got 35k aswll. I think that's the average you get with runflats. :thumbdo:

Mileage doesn't seem good, especially at the price of runflats....I used to get about 80 000km on normal tyres on my E36 325i....and I used to drive pretty hard........

It also does not 'help' that these are usually slightly performance orientated tyres, meaning they have softer rubber compounds. So tyre life is going to be reduced, and then being RFT's also adds to this. I reckon around 40k km is decent. Yep, if you can rotate (as in don't have narrow/wides) the tyres as often as possible this will help, as well as ensuring that the tyre pressures are always correct - best is to check when the tyres are still cold, so preferably at home and not at the filling station after driving...

I got 50k off my last set... but that had steel banding hanging out... I obviously enjoyed the slicks for a little too long :D

With rears, especially wide tyres I gather, one has to keep an eye on the inner shoulder wear!! As I have mentioned numerous times on this forum, the Conti RFT's are just plane horrid and deteriorate badly as they wear, but the Potenza RFT's that I have are really good! Consider that they originally were off an E92 335i and were already below 50% tread remaining for the rears, the fronts were of different ages and wear with the left being also around 50% and the right practically new. With this "undesirable" combination I was expecting very bad results, and certainly worse than the Conti RFT's that I had which the rears were new while the fronts were a bit more the 50% remaining - the result with these Potenza RFT's was that the ride was vastly improved and noise levels a lot more acceptable, main thing, no more tramlining!

I have since fitted new front tyres (Potenza RFT's of course) so that both are the same in terms of age and wear, but the rears are still currently the ones that I mentioned above, and they are still really good! No vibrations or weird noises - if you stand them up on a level surface they don't fall over or even appear to lean, so tread wear is very well controlled! Read that they developed the tread pattern and sizes with this in mind! But still means that your alignment and pressures need to be checked and kept in good order...

I got approx 30000km on the rear runflats Bridgestone Potenza(245, 35, 18). The front had to be subsequently changed for not having allignment done (costly mistake:cry:). I changed both with Bridgestone Potenzas, the front to non-run flats and the rear with run flats. Second set gave me 25000km on rear and the front is still going stong. I assume the non-flats to give me 40% extra life. Def mDe my mind up on sticking to non-run flats.

Just be careful running a mixture of non-RFT's and RFT's - this apparently can cause handling balance issues!!

I have since removed all the run-flats. Thanks for the heads up. I have heard it mentioned a few times.

No problem! Probably overly careful, but does make sense - even mixing tyre brands is not ideal for that matter...

Wish my 335 tyres can last for 30/40k...:nonono:

On the X3 the front tyres will have to be replaced now at 40k:bangdesk:

Seems the front tyres wear faster than the rears, and on the outer sides of the tyres, and wheel alignment is fine.....
