BMW engines are run in at the factory this is confirmed when you do the first oil change at 25000 km's when you buy the car

In the old days they were not and the first oil change was at 1000km's

That being said you need to run in all the drive gear though
Gearbox Diffs Drive shafts and so on

In the owners manual it says no reving past 5000 rpm on a petrol engine and 4000 rpm on a Deisel engine for the first 2000km

Your engine failing at 109000km's is more than likly due to an overheat or a oil pressure loss some time in its life
 I agree - you guys need to go on a factory tour with the BMW club - if there is a club member on here can he organize...fanatics are just as fanatical as them.

That is unsettling - you would think that someone would take the time to tell you what if any special precautions to take as per the running in of the new engine.

My theory of motorplan (probably not a revelation for most) is that it is designed to take car of your car to the minimum degree for their costs - so lengthy service intervals saves them on oil and ultimately labour over the lifespan of the typical car. In my case, I have done a little less than 10k km in the year that I've had the car - service indication shows that it is only due in the next 18k km or Jan 2012. Then motorplan ends mid 2012 and can't be extended any further. Personally I'd rather change oil and filters at least once a year or even shorter in terms of mileage.

And after all of this they never really indicated what was the course of your old engine's strange wear??

when you rebuild a motor to break it in
you drive it nice and slow till it good and warm look for a quit road then in 4th
accelerate hard from 60 to 90 kph if you can do this on a incline even better
when you get it to 90 lift foot off accelerator and let it coast with clutch engaged to 60 then floor it again do this 10 times
then you drive home check for leaks and drive it like you always drive the car
for the first 1000km don't red line it too much
motors that has been driven like this tends to perform better than nursed ones
do a Google search on run in procedures and you will find the most interesting views on this
