Do you think that fitting a Dastek Unichip could possibly override the problem?
as it still happens, but much less than usual!

I seem to have the same issue. I have a 2003, 318i Touring (not Ti), Auto. It has 112k kms (service due soon).

For a few months it's been idling very badly. It has power when I accelerate and when driving is fine but when idling it drops to about 500rpm and shakes and shudders. It's like there is an anti-stall type thing that kicks in and if that wasn't there the car would die. If I switch on the aircon it helps it run smoother but not perfectly.

The problem is intermittent though. It will be fine for a few days and then do this and then fine for a few days again. Sometimes if it starts playing up I switch off the car and start it again and it goes away.

A trend I think I've spotted is that it seems to happen when the fuel tank is less than 1/4 left. I had a thought that maybe the fuel supply wasn't great when the tank is low or there is a dirty spark-plug that's effected by low amount of fuel in the tank (not sure if that's even possible).

I've had it at a mechanic twice and both times he just cleared ECU faults and said I should see if it goes away. I'm changing mechanics for the service.

[Edit] - I've also started to notice a petrol / fumes smell in the car when idling. Wonder if it could be related?

Any ideas based on the above?

20 mins on M43, n42/46 is a different story, you have to remove the intake manifold.

I have a 99 318i and have the same problem. I was told my idling valve needs to be cleaned. Well if i dnt get it right then ill just have to live with it. This only happens to me in traffic. When i hit the open road then the car is fine but as soon as i hit traffic this rough idles happen. Im going to service my car the weekend and try and check everything.

Check for vacuum leaks, once the rubber hose on the manifold tear/perish or i dont know what the heck happened to it car idled like 50 year old diesel truck sounding like it was going to cut out, replaced the rubber hose and viola she was purring again,

just a quick q when was the last time she went in for a service? lol that must be the most stupid question ever its like when you don't know what wrong with your computer and you just reboot it, service = reboot :) try that maybe she just needs some under bonnet loving.

I replaced vacuum pipes on mine but the problem came back but at least it doesn't sound like a diesel truck its very much softer

Rough Idle related

My car stared to do this 2days ago, this is one of those BMW problems been on some US forums(http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73905) and it seems to be common occurrence, every one says its a fuel level sensor or fuel relay(if there is such a thing)

Heres what happened I was driving on the highway when the fuel light came on so I decided to pull into the 1st petrol station I saw, left the petrol station (filled to about half a tank) and about 170meters from the station standing at a traffic light the needle just started jumping up and down from the usual idle speed to 1000RPM and then down below 500RPM car shook and sputtered and I had to keep my foot on the throttle to prevent the rough idle, nursed the car to a parking lot close by and the Sputtering didnt stop and the car stalled and struggled to start, left it there for about 10 minutes got in started it again and everything was fine???

car is in reserve again right now will try and replicate the problem today (sux balls)

Problem solved. The pipe that leads to the crank case valve was corroded and leaking. Pipe replaced 3 weeks ago as part of major service. Problem has not returned.
