Good write up on that rattle issue. I really like the uniqueness of this car. its not your typical M-sport/Individual. Unique indeed.

have the engine mounts been changed yet?

Well done bud:bravo:

:fencelook: I've turned down one random offer already, you guys may be waiting for some time ...I definitely need to keep the car longer than my search took:biglol:

Thanks for the comments guys:ty:

Had some extra time this weekend... So gave her a very quick polish with some meguiars cleaner wax...

Snapped a quick no filter pic after work today (just before a drive in the rain).

***Mid Year Update***

After the whole exhaust rattle issue being resolved, she has been moving along nicely...so I started to focus my attention on some random niggles...

Some time back...I ended up driving through a hectic storm (seems to be happening often in Durban these days), I noticed some water ingress at the rear passenger foot wells, having had this issue on the X1 (well, at the front foot wells in this case), I had already known how to fix the issue...

img_20190508_140939_8455723123.jpg

img_20190508_140942_9597319508.jpg

The seal had given way, applied some 3m two-way tape along the inner of the door skin and some old fashion duct tape over the top for extra measure, then simulated a heavy storm using a hose pipe...as expected, issue has been fixed...repeated the procedure for the other side and called it a day :=):

About 3 weeks back, I was running abit low on fuel (well, the light had just come on) and noticed that I had a slight miss/stutter at low rpms if I tried to accelerate, immediately got to a garage and topped up...assuming it was fuel related...
Anyway, my driving style doesn't allow for <1.5k rpms in 2nd/3rd gear often...due to my commute being mostly highways...So things seemed fine, till I started to notice a distinct "fart" from the exhaust on cold starts...surprisingly, it didnt feel like a miss, nor did the car show any signs of a miss whilst cold...but once warmed up it was definitely present (only when at low rpms)...I happened to have a bottle of LiquiMoly injector cleaner...so decided to give that a shot...and it did reduced the miss (but was still slightly present). Continued to use the car to give the LM a chance to do its thing...and gave the car a nice run up to PMB for cars in the park that weekend ...she drove well ,with no issues ...until i got back to Durban and she started to miss again.

Decided its time I set up INPA on a "borrowed" laptop from the SO...lol the Windows XP life:biglol:

With that set up and running, I scanned the car for codes...and no existing errors to note:hammerhead:

Proceeded to remove engine covers, assuming I had a plug related problem...however, was doubtful, as the plugs were NGK platinum (fitted in 2017, with roughly 25k kms on them)

img_20190608_123201_1374743096.jpg

Removed the plugs, and was rather surprised to see that they were more or less toast...especially because they are relatively new ...and suppose to last +- 60k kms:eek:mgwaiting:

pjimage_6164220389.jpg

Decided to stick with the brand, and fit a new set of NGKs
img_20190608_142449_9325857148.jpg

Scanned for codes...still no faults, so went for a drive, whilst cold...everything was good...but as soon as she warmed up, the miss was back:hammerhead:

This time it had to be a coil pack problem, scanned the car again (didnt turn off after the test)...Misfire on Cyl 2

img_20190608_151714_8700737706.jpg

Switched cyl 2 coil with cyl 1...
img_20190608_160240_7584889531.jpg

Confirmed problem with cyl 2 coil pack:thumbs:, had to wait till Monday to fetch a new coil pack from GW...normally I'd just replace all 6 ...but the others seemed to be fine (did a cylinder drop test) ...so just fitted 1 new Bosch coil:thumbs:

Scanned for codes...all cleared, took the car for a test drive last night and 100% smooth again:smilebounce:

While the covers were off...I treated them to some AutoFinesse Dressle, then I got trigger happy, and did the whole engine bay.

:blowheart:

Should be updating this thread soon, since I have all the components required for my sound install...just need to get some time to actually fit it, atleast @osiris has helped me out by leaving a remote and rca signal tap in the boot:chef:...till then:ty:

Well done! The E46 is really bringing out the DIY'er in you.. Very glad the car went to a fellow enthusiast :bravo:

That engine bay is also looking pretty good man.. Think I have to swing past for the same treatment (don't you hate comments like these) :roflol:

sho this car is coming along nicely. That engine mount is concerning. Who worked on the car last? That looks like someone put the engine mounts back but didn't tighten them properly afterwards?

I am actually dealing with the same issue myself with my Z4, I started stripping it last night as I'm swapping out the turbos and two of the bolts that tie the subframe to the engine mounts were so loose I just took them out by hand. Also one of the bolts on my subframe itself was also very loose.

Trying to narrow down which mechanic it was cause I have my suspicions. :fencelook:

Not entirely sure, @that_guy_Ettiene will have to chip in, Likely when the headers were fitted, these were left either over/under tightened.

I did see that 4 new OEM bolts were fitted around 10k kms ago though:hammerhead:

Either way...the support bracket is properly sorted now:thumbs:

Saw this car yesterday. In great nick for it's age/mileage and still smells new :inlove:

Just that exhaust note left, and a better driver, and it'll be perfect :smilebounce:

Yeah you will generally hear the exhaust whilst you staring at the rear end:roflol:
