Well guys I dont even know what to say, i will rather just post this on behalf of a friend of mine, he posted it on the ST forum cos our forum was down, he is a user on here aswell (xcaliber)

Seems there are still REAL mechanics out there.

I've been struggling with an annoying metallic vibration on my car between 1800 and 2500 RPM. First time I took it to BMW (Leo Haese Hatfield) it was resolved, but returned after 1500km. I took it back and this time it seems to be holding.

Today I decided to give my car a good cleaning and opened up the bonnet only to find I might have driven over someone as there was a t-shirt stuck at the bottom of my engine bay. By the looks of it, it might have been someone very young (inspecting the print on the fabric). I tried pulling it out and, LOW AND BEHOLD, I find it's wrapped around the pipes and what I guess are the fuel lines. Exaclty where BMW told me the problem was.

There is an old saying about Fords. As long as you have pliers and wire you can fix anything that's wrong with them. As a first time BMW owner it seems cable ties and t-shirts are the tools of the trade.

I'm not sure if I should laugh of cry. Sure, it fixed the problem, but FFS how can this be allowed in a BMW workshop?

What do you guys think?

So what do you guys think? How should he go about dealing with the situation?

I would get him to contact BMW head office and complain about it. Only thing would be proving that BMW did actually put this in place!

Was the mechanic's name Lappies by any chance? :)

Thanks for posting this Scouse.

Guys, I routinely clean my engine bay and Yesterday I opened it for the first time since the last maintenance.
I was really shocked to find how they fixed my vibration problem. The vibration is gone, and I'm really happy about it, but the method used is unacceptable.

How would you personally go about having this resolved? And what would be an acceptable outcome?

lol, thats unbelivable.. and he had to pay for that repair? shocking..

No, it was "fixed" under maintenance.

By wrapping a piece of very decorative cloth/t-shirt around a bunch of pipes and what seems to be an earthing cable. Check the pic in the first post.

Okay, i saw the pic now. I was using cellphone, could not see the pics at that time.

Rant them everywhere : Hellopeter, BMWSA, car magazines.

This was really stupid , even taxi drivers wont even try that next to fuel pipes.

Absolutely shocking. Judging by your signature maybe the mechanic figured being diesel it would be ok to do this around a fuel line. I also guess they were out of duct tape :)

I would definitely take the car back. Get the dealer principal envolved! Take as many pics as possible. That's just a cheap fix - preventing high cost for warranty claims (i would assume). I'm pretty sure no where on TIS it says you should use a piece of cloth for a repair. Let alone to prevent vibration occuring!

First you laugh so hard that you cry... And then your blood boils!

Document it with as many pics as possible, get the dealership involved and if they give you grief then take it to the media
