Possible turbo failure

Hi fanatics,

I fear that today the inevitable happened to my 2002 e46 320d. I was driving around 2800-3000rpm when a sudden pop/bang sound happened, followed by an immediate loss of power. It happened 1min from my house and I saw no smoke initially but a massive amount of white smoke from the bonnet and tail pipe as soon as I got home.

I have been noticing (what seems to me like excessive) black smoke when accelerating and a high pitch whistle sound when getting into boost for the past month or two.

Any suggestions as to where to start and what to look at?

Thanks in advance.

That pop noise might be a boost pipe that got loose also can result in black smoke cause turbo does not boost like it should

My turbo started whistling before it went bang.

I would really not drive the car if I were you, Get the car towed and go get this seen to, cause When it does go bang it takes allot of other shit with it and costs a frikken fortune!

The black smoke was happening for a month or two before the pop sound. Afterwards there was a massive amount of white smoke.

Yeah, I will tow it to Turbo Direct during this week and see what the damage is. Definitely not going to drive at all.

The charge pipes on those 320d's are held in place by big clips, maybe check it out also.

white smoke would indicate oil being burnt, sounds like ur turbo has popped.
It could be caused by blocked cats from the diesel

Give Gaby a call from Fastec Turbos, he can assist with repaired turbos, rebuild them and provide parts, balancing etc.
His number is 0829224233 and he is based at the Rand Airport in the old Go-tech building

Hi

let me know what the quote works out to be please, maybe I can help. Also make sure they do a oil change if they replace the turbo and check the oil feed the pipes.

The cats have been removed, so that should not be the problem.

wow, thats hectic... what was your mileage when this happened?

a really sharp turbo place should be able to inspect the damage and tell you what failed, and usually what caused it.

Definitely not a good feeling when that happens. I was expecting it to happen sooner or later though, as the odometer has just hit 260 000 km.

I have heard only good things about Fastec, so would prefer taking it to them.

So I have decided to rather opt for a new Garrett turbo as opposed to going the reconditioned turbo route.

Who in the Jhb/Pta area sells well priced new Garrett turbos?

Sorry to hear bud, but at 260k odd, it was close i would say.

try Stallion turbo's as well. Afaik they take your broken turbo and give you a choice of options what to replace with?

As far as I am aware (awaiting confirmation from the mechanic though) I have the Garrett Gt1749V turbo fitted to my car, so after all the horror stories on reconditioning and repairing those turbos I am definitely more keen on getting an original replacement Garrett turbo.

I see TurboDirect are the agents for Garrett. Has anyone used them and how is their service/pricing?
