Dude you are too desperate to justify an emotional purchase. Take the pos back while you still can and look for a better one

Mate you said it was mint yet you missed or failed to mention it was smashed and cheaply repaired. This car ia gonna cost you in the long run.

The front inner body plastic covers if missing will cost roughly R2k per side and the engine cover roughly R4k.
Lights are a R10k each affair and the front bumper cover roughlyR15k.

Mechanical repairs as per your list another roughly R50k excluding suspension and all of a sudden it becomes an eye watering sum.

All of the above cannot be had in the aftermarket.

As one of my owners said to me "M really does stand for MONEY"

Look like I am going to have to sell this car with a loss, with only 2 weeks of ownership.
I have
Oem bumper
Fender plastics
Oem boot lip
Oem diffuser

Wow that didn't go too well. But don't be disgruntled. We are all still learning. If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for the car?

No reason to sell at a loss if you are comfortable with getting it fixed.

If you are handy you shall be able to complete a lot of the minor things that may require attention yourself.

As to the OEM bumper have a close look at the inner stiffener which is made of polystyrene and insure that it is firmly located on the cover with no broken tabs.
If there are broken tabs you shall have to have it fixed or it will hang lopsided.

Inner fender plastics locate at the bottom on an aluminium hanger which is often times broken so have a look at the hangers closely and you might be able to repair them.

Good luck and do not be disheartened.

The way prices are going on these someone is going to restore it to it's former glory and have a long term investment on their hands. They really are awesome cars when looked after.

Well this forum has really put me off the bmw brand.

I will fix up what I can do, re align and replace.
Head lamps not to fazed right now, not a train smash that it's not eom xenons.

Will see afterwards what should I do with the car. Never really wanted to drive today after some of the posts.

One of the guys who has responded to your post has spent well over R200k to fix his car ( it is a love hate relationship he has with it )so take what he says as first hand experience rather than critique.

As to you being put off by some of the comments I would not let it hassle me if I were in your shoes.

Unfortunately a lot of what was said is the truth. A M car is not a purchase to be taken lightly and to be done without prior checks and verifications.

The forum is a useful resource for pre purchase info. In terms of an emotional purchase these things happen trust me I know and I've dug a hole most likely bigger then the one you're in.

If it's a enjoyment and not a monetary issue fix it up and take your time and enjoy her. I bought a M5 that I only started enjoying 4 months into ownership and it was for my enjoyment not to flip it for a profit.

Look at getting the relevant parts as best you can, diy what you can and check for parts on this forum and your bill may be much less.

If it was all to have a budget M and make a profit it unfortunately did not work out this time but now you have a opportunity to restore it at your own pace and create a specimen, this all said hoping the "heart" is still ok and healthy.

Dude, you came on here stating Mint when the car was far from it, the guys just pointed out the things you seemed to have missed. you had done 2 weeks of research, sometimes thats not even enough...

If you bought a mint M3, you would be smiling from ear to ear and no one on here will be able to take that from you... but now you realize that you have been taken for a small ride and your emotions are running wild...

Also You're not the first on this forum to buy an e46 M3 and then realize its not what you was expecting and will need work and money... then want to sell it after spending some cash on it already...

Fix the car up and keep it since you already committed now... its not going to happen over night, its a process that will take time but in the end you will feel better knowing you saved the car...

Hi.

Thanks for that, however never say it was mint.

I will evaluate the car and then take it from there.

Been following this tread, sorry to hear about your misfortune with the blowout and all that, glad you are okay.

The developments of this thread has little to do with the BMW brand as you describe, and everything to do with buying a high performance car without performing due diligence on the history. Same can happen buying a c63, Rs4 etc

I would advise getting full diagnostics done, just to be sure of the mechanics before abusing the car too much. And for that this is the right place, there are loads of e46 owners here.

I really hope they underlying issues are minor, and you get sorted soon!

If you really love the car, keep it. Sort out all the mechanicals and make it reliable. Drive the car and enjoy it for what it is.
Unless you bought to restore it and enter it into a concours.

Really gonna argue on that?

Any punter that knows his M3's will see a 2004 see no xenons and tell you it's a wreck and walk away. Leaving you with a car the only people willing to buy are the cash monies and trade in of some derelict piece of crap or some other unlucky sob.

And it really is not this forums fault you failed to notice some basic tell tale signs.

I shall now stop smacking your goons as i know the pain of a E46 M3 restoration bill. What i can tell you is don't make a silly decision. Have the car properly inspected then decide on a way forward. And by that i mean have the engine/chassis and electronics inspected.

In the mean time drain the oil, put in some LM 10-60 and keep the revs to 6k or less and don't launch it and don't slam on the shifts.

There are various places selling M3's being broken up for spares on scumtree due to guys boiling the motor and lacking the funds to repair it.

Firstly, congratulations on your purchase - if this is a car you like and you hold dear, don't let the masses dictate otherwise to you.

Before having posted here, you should have read through a few threads so that you can make yourself akin to the following:

- people on here will scare you into thinking your purchase is poor, if it deviates ever so slightly from OEM.
- the same people battering your purchase will offer you 'advice' and also their services, in the vague hope that you'll side with them and send your car to them for them to repair
- most people will comment on your car without ever having owned an M Car and going by what they read on the internet, and what they heard from someone else

In summary:

- don't let the naysayers put you off
- take what you read here with a pinch of salt
- research your plans in detail, from independent sources who have nothing to potentially gain from you
- enjoy your car for what it is, and as a project it will prove fruitful

To OP, congrats on the car man, I really like the colour!

It is not all doom and gloom bud, I don't feel you should sell the car at all and you shouldn't be scared into it!

If I was scared by everyone's comments when I purchased my M6, it would never have happened. At the end of the day its your car and you should do with it what you feel but selling just because of peoples comments isn't the way to go.

By the same token, there is a wealth of advice that was given here and you were aware of some if it before going in and potential prices on repairs, not so?
Yes, repair bills on M cars are scary but you will never know if there are real issues before getting someone knowledgeable to go through the actual car instead of pulling faults from pics.

My advice is:

Spend on someone to go through the car mechanically FIRST. Cosmetic stuff can be done later as long as you know your car is solid from a mechanical perspective.
Then weigh your options! Just don't make a rash decision that you might regret down the line.

Good luck bud

Look, you have the car. You will have guys offer you ridiculously low amounts for it as is. Alot of what you need to fix cosmetically won't require immediate attention. Focus on the mechanicals and do a proper job with them IMHO - I mean it is a running and driving car at the end of the day, not exactly scrap metal. How much the cosmetics will bother you is up to you. In a 2-3 year period you will have a car that is pretty much 100% doing a bit at a time - treat it as a hobby build. I've been tempted by many E-generation M5/6/3s recently either to build a track toy or to slowly get up to standard.

However, heed what the others say in terms of cost. I paid a pretty penny thinking I was 'saving' a car in the past and lost big in the end - EVEN WITH alot of work done myself and getting bargains along the way. Know upfront what you are in for and whether it is something you can do. Similarly, spent money actually preserving a car and it offset all of the losses... win some/lose some, as long as it balances in your favour in the end I say.

Preservation is easier than restoration BY FAR.
