You just need to replace those seals, I stand to be corrected but I think they are solenoid valve seals. Very cheap from the stealer and get a mech to replace or DIY. I remember doing that on my e46 a while back when I noticed the oil leak.

Quite common on that N42 engine. You need to unplug the two solenoid valves that go into the engine block in the circled area. (Remove metal retainers first). When you remove these from the engine, you will notice that they have two O-rings each (one larger and one smaller one). You need to replace these o-rings to stop the leak. This is a 5 minute job. Really easy fix.

cheers

finally got around to replacing those o-rings, did it together with the oil change.

when i removed the solenoid valves i was surprised to find out that both of them only had the small green o-ring, the big black ones were missing.

i duly replaced them and i'll monitor over the next week to make sure the oil leak is gone.

Does anyone know what the effect would be if a person accidentally swopped the two solenoid valves?

well oil still mixed with dust and not dripping or nice and wet its not your oil leak. how did it look at the bottom when you removed the sump plug? any oil on the floor? Check at the back of the oil filter housing for they also tend to leak. I heard that the breather system can also cause some oil consumption
