Overheating Issues ** Advice needed**

Hey guys,

So today my car goes out of plan
Driving my car this morning and everything is fine - decide to go to the local autoparts shop to browse for some things and on my way home as i put the gearbox in sport my 320i (f30) heats up like crazy and goes into limp mode (gauge didn't go all the way, went to about 3/4 of the way and i pulled over to allow the car to cool down) The motor itself didn't overheat to where there was smoke coming out of the engine.
I am able to start the car and drive it, but wont because i don't want to risk any other unnecessary problems.

BMW has done work with my coolant bottle and sorted out the issues with it over there, the worked on the external thermostat and also replaced my timing chain (got my car back on Wednesday this passed week after this work was done

Please could you tell me what could potentially be the next thing that's going to cause my car to spend another few days at the dealership

right now my only suspicion is that its the water pump that's failing

Well I would say water pump or the system is blocked.... I had overheating issues with both my E36 and e46.... The water pumps from what I read on the net has a shelf life and likes to bugger out. I would start there. Iv replaced on the e36 a few times. Best quality I found was from gw. Pump is still running strong. Hope you havnt had serious overheat in the past as I suspect it would cause head damage.

This is the 5 month i have the car,
We going to start diagnostic with the system and the pump
suspect its pump because when feeling around the cooling pipes the bay itself was too warm on one side

Got word back from the workshop today.
My water pump was failing.

It's still weird that the water pump would fail this early, the car has only done 85000kms, so not sure what would cause the pump to go this early

I know on the E9x generations we have an electric waterpump (which is a case of 'when' and not 'if' it will fail). Generally the pump and thermostat would be replaced in that instance.

With the F30 i believe that they've switched back to the mechanical water pump instead of electrical (can someone confirm?)

Not entirely sure if this is true but hopefully the Stealership covers your cost!

The cost was covered by the stealership, they had the car with them last week for the timing chain replacement and i asked them to look into the car overheating, i get the lady back today :smilebounce:

BMWs and Waterpumps are notorious for being a common item to go.. Glad it did not cause damage.

The pre LCI has the Electric Pump and the LCI had the Mechanical pump (this is N55 vs B58 though)

sure the n20 has an electrical one
But with me being me, i wont be driving the car hard for the next 1000km - hopefully i can hold this rule on the breakfast run

Also happy that it was just the pump that went and my heads werent warped/cracked
