so yesterday morning i left very early, heading for kimberley from pta , had a lot of work to take care of..
at about six in the morning just outside bloemhof, just into the last stop and go, murphy was waiting for me next to the road.. a biggish rock dislodged from the wall of dirt on the left, rolling in front of me..
no space to dodge left, right, and no emergency braking with a construction lorry on my ass..

this was the result.. not what you want to see when you get out of you car..

Shooo...

THe only place your going to find this is a shop that has an old poofed motor, scrapyards wont sell you loose

I could perhaps help you with a better price from BMW, alternatively, import and wait.....

Maybe express DHL or something,

Edit: This now begs the question, if the sump looks like this, it what kind of state is the plate the goes below the sump?

skidplate/sump protector did its job for the most part, it is also bent which is nothing a hammer cant fix.. problem is that nice little convenient plastic access panel you take off when you drain oil.. no protection there..

Oh no!! Hope you were able to pull over and stop as soon as possible. Wow, R7k is harsh, but good question, what about the sump plate cover? No damage to the bumper etc?

Insurance? Hope you are able to get a replacement soon!!!

If I am not mistaken the saloons never came with the plastic cover, only the Ci's did. (Read something to that effect in the bentley manual, not sure how it applies to the diesel models)

That's interesting, otherwise sometime in the past it was just never put back on. The E90 has a cover though...

Well in the M3 its all panelled up for aerodynamics and to much sure the air flows properly over the oil cooler

ah yes.. insurence :)

here is the thing.. since the car is technically a motorsport model (listed as such because of sportspack yada yada..)
and because i use the car for business and drive at least 70k a year just for business, my insurence premium a month is through the roof.. only way to bring it down a bit is to opt for a higher excess.. which makes claiming for this a futile exercise..

regarding the sump guard, it would have kept the rock out , but the rock entered exactly through the square gap in the guard that enables you to change the oil without having to remove all the covers.. i was under the impression all beemers have this access panel? the plastic cover that seals it offers no protection at all in a case like this..

i think i would have prefered to have to remove the sumpguard to drain the oil, in return for 100% sump protection.. ah well..

anyways, thanx for the commiserations guys, taking the sump to a welding specialist today to see if the can weld it up and guarantee it wont leak..

holding thumbs..

edit : @whatting, thanx for the pointer, kinda scary, looks exactly like my car! :)
