if they did not fit mini cats then that is most lightly your problem... you can try swapping the sensors around but i dont think that is the problem if you dont have mini cats... most lightly the post cat sensors are running too hot because the cats are gone... if it was the pre cat sensors then i think the engine light would come on :dunno:

i would use software to fix this if you were going to do it anyway... if not i would just fit some mini cats

*likely

The rest makes no sense to me. Mini cats sounds like a very poor solution to a simple problem. The post-cat sensors will not run too hot either, because they are too far down the line from the engine and require built in heaters to get to operating temp, even if you are running way too lean.

MSM, I agree, wait for the problem to come up again, and then swap the sensor plugs before you clear it.

Yes you could get a software fix, but only if you can find someone who can do it...

the cats absorb heat when they are in place... so the post cat sensors will run hotter when there is no cat... on some cars is is a problem i dont know if this is the case on the e46...

whats wrong with mini cats all they do is block some of the heat so it does not throw errors... software would be better only because you can tune the car at the same time...

If you want to take out the cats take them out, why have a mini cat to fool the system, if you can easily do it with two resistors? Also, the heat should never be a problem, and the cats require heat to operate properly, but there job is not to reduce heat, it is to convert mainly CO to CO2 (etc). Lambda probes are designed to handle extreme temperatures (the pre-cat ones also have built-in heaters and endure much higher temperatures without cat to cool down the air, and they are essentially the same thing, just double.)

It is not the heat that cause the errors.

Hmmm, okay maybe I should explain this a bit better:

Firstly, the engine and the cats need to be up to operating temperatures for catalytic conversion to take place. So you have to drive around for about 30km. Then it also only works properly in a semi-steady state. So say you are cruising at a constant speed, say 120km/h on the highway. Now the ecu will start to cycle the air/fuel ratio slightly for the CATS to work properly and to monitor their operation. So the pre-cat sensors will record this cycling, but the post-cat sensors should show a steady reading. If the post-cat lambdas don't show the steady reading, the ECU assumes the cats are not operating correctly and throws a CEL.

Electronic cat-fooler will just keep the reading at the expected steady reading, and voila, the ecu thinks the cats are 100%

unless ive got this very wrong Lambda sensors read heat? so putting a mini cat on will block some heat so the sensor reads what it was expecting... personally i would rather have less unnecessary electronics on my car if i dont need it... its just another thing that can go wrong... if the cat-fooler makes the engine run better then there would be a point...

i have done very little research into this because i dont have this problem on my car i could be completely wrong... but if cat-foolers and mini-cats equally good then i would just fit mini-cats...

ok i just looked it up and a lambda does not use heat at all to find the O2 levels :banghead: i was told it did by an exhaust guy looks like it was just an exhaust guy talking kak...

does a cat-fooler replace the sensor? if not i would still get a mini-cat to have less electronics...

Small update: Did another 200K or so, and no lights yet. Will wait until the end of the week until I hook up the diagnostics again.
