Options on mods for E34 M5

I did and still do, Rick. I have the original rims with both the turbine and throwing star covers. I probably indicated to you on a prior occasion that I have hung on to the originals to sell with the car as this will no doubt be important to the discerning buyer. I also have the original lights and (would you believe) the original exhaust although it has been partially dissected.

If you sell to Fordkoppie, he already has some throwing stars....... Just me trying my luck....

Hi guys,
I am some way through the turbo-ing on a 1991 M5 (and have been for MANY MANY MONTHS -thanks to a certain tuner in the Cape Town) . My car is in pristine condition and also has under 100k mileage.

I decided against supercharging from an efficiency and space perspective. A turbo is more efficient at lower boost limits (i am not boosting this motor past 0.8 bar) and you have much more flexibility in placement. The issue you have with the e34 is specifically the placement of the power steering pump for RHD. It pretty much dictates a complex manifold design and implementation. The space available for a supercharger is even more problematic as belt placement becomes very complex with the moving of multiple components and the potential removal of "important" functions like air conditioning.

Now in terms of wheels I have decided I am now an official wheel whore. For the M5 I have a set of very cool 90's BBS's, Turbines and E39 M5 originals.

Later

What you mean to say it was in pristine condition before you started with it....why of all things would you choose a good condition M5 for this kind of thing, why not any of the other e34s they are just as suitable for this application, if not more so.

I suppose I'll chip in with my 2 cents again.

Guys please dont "mod" these e34 M5's, if I look at what I'm going through to un-mod one, both finacially and from a stress level perspective. I think modding one in any way is just ruining the last model M car BMW ever handbuilt.

Besides I can hardly change gears fast enough with my stock one, it's a really baulky gearchange, part of the nature of the car. if it had even more power the chances of over reving it in first and second and grenading the engine are pretty good.

If anybody has any more pristine low mileage E34 M5's they want to trash, let's swap, you can take mine and mod it to your hearts content and I'll care for the original piece of BMW heritage.

:argh: Sorry guys but the high chairs on this thread are just a little ridiculous. I own a number of ///M's and frankly the e34 is lazy. If someone wants to spend their money changing that, surely that is their call. I personally have kept the original motor on a stand and bought a donor car with its sub 100k motor for exactly the above mentioned purpose (to drag the lazy out of that car).

I have driven 600kw M5's that have remained perfectly drivable... it really depends on how you treat your cars. If you re going to go around wringing the guts out of them, crash changing and generally not having any mechanical sympathy then you deserve the crap coming your way.

My cars are all garaged, get detailed regularly, get every pamper from a maintenance perspective and are fanatically looked after. I have seen some of the rubbish that some so-called fanatics consider pristine and I honestly would not sully the rest of my cars with that rubbish in my garage.

I really think the "heritage police" need to think about this for a bit. I have personally seen a dozen "pristine" low mileage M5's and not one of them was near the condition of mine (which is modded). Every owner was selling because they are bitch expensive to maintain and their value is plummeting. Not even the UK collectors market is interested in e34's. Those of us that choose to waste our money to cherish this unwanted "piece of heritage" really have our work cut out for us and like you, after reading this, could really have done without the sermon.

Oh and I wont be swapping any of my beloved ///M's with anyone thank you very much.

I am obviously not going to argue, you do have a right to do with your own stuff as you please.

Lazy?... nah not mine, must be something wrong with yours if you see it as lazy.

The SA built E34 M5 they made 265, the rest of the world got thousands generally at a much lower specification level, so sooner or later these particular ones should increase in value.

You shouldn't take it so personally. It's just someone elses point of view. I do think there is truth to the matter.

Take the 325IS. If you pull the engine apart and replace the internals so you can turbo it, then upgrade the brakes and suspension to handle the new power... then what are you left with?? A highly modified 2 door E30 as pretty much everything that made it an IS is gone. Maybe it's just a question of me not understanding, but why not start with a descent 2 door body for R10k instead of a perfectly good IS for R100k??

This just an example. At the end of the day, it's your car to do with as you please and I think we can all agree that regardless of what we own (Rare of not)... we've all thought about getting more power from our cars :thumb:

Compared to a s54 engine'd Z4, yes I agree that they are lazy.
It is anyone's fullest right to do whatever they please with any of their cars, but with this specific car I just presonally feel it was a nice package to keep as the Motorsport division AG intended.
It would be like having Cameron Diaz that looks pretty good as is that has got plenty of character and letting her have a size DD boobjob.
Luckily my search is over......
