Oil Sludge in 120i

Hi There
I would really appreciate some advice on a problem I am experiencing.
I have a 2004 BMW 120i purchased new, and serviced at the agents. It has 155 000km on the clock. Before the last service the car began to "start rough" with a rattling noise which disappeared after 10 seconds. The car also had less power than before.
The tappet cover was removed by BMW, and they informed me that the engine was full of sludge. An oil service was done, but the problems, and sludge remains. According to the BMW workshop the only way to get rid of the sludge is to completely strip the engine, clean and rebuilt it.
Now my question is:
1) Is it necessary to strip and clean the engine?
2) Will the sludge work itself out after a couple of oil changes done at shorter intervals?
3) Can I add an additive to remove the sludge?
