Oil Noob - 2nd oil top up @ 6600km. Is this Normal?

Hey guys

My car just gave me the oil low warning light again.. (no the car is not on an incline)

It gave me the minimum oil warning at 3000km, took it to BMW, they topped it up with a liter of oil for free.

Now at 6600km, it's at minimum again...

Is this normal? I know cars generally use more oil during run-in period, but that's only up until 2000km? Could it be the cone filter that I installed in the stock airbox at all? Thinking of putting my stock back in anyways, but just wondering why so much oil is being used..

Car also giving a slight but noticeable burning smell... not smelling as fresh as it should...eish..

Maybe mike can help me here?

Thanks

@ri I recon thats not normal, all our cars which are much older than yours dont use any oil between oil changes. Even my old E30 that was on 373000Km I only put in oil once a year with the oil change.. Hope it isnt a major problem. If it is a run in thing then I dont know about that stuff seeing as I have never had a new car. But then again my dads Jeep, has also never needed any oil top up between services..

Cheers

your driving it hard....why worry about it when its on motorplan?

Just worried its a defect or something... :( Doesn't sound normal.. Don't want to keep topping it up all the time either...

From what I remember, one can (500ml) every 1000km is considered to be within bounds for most cars (thats the official story I think), but from experience it sounds wrong. I've never owned a brand new car though, so no running-in experience.

I had a 1986 Jetta with 200 000km on the odo which used about 500ml on every 2000km or so. Then I had a Corolla that used no (noticeable) oil at all up to the day when I sold it at 213000km. Also had a citigolf (oil use not noticable at 150 000km). Knew someone who bought a new fiat Palio and it needed about two cans before it reached 15000km.

Ie it sounds like your oil comsumption might be running-in related, but if it stays there it is definitely not normal.

holy crap no, between 15-25K service intervals on my car my oil doesn't drop a mm. and its on 227K now, plus I drive it damn hard, don't need to make any excuses there.. so ja, something must be wrong there @ri, I can't see how it can be right bro

Anyone wanna place bets on this car reaching 40000km? Its cursed, or was cursed to get such a driver.

So it's my fault or what?

 calypso. Hopefully I'll strike jackpot and get a 135i before then :)

Yeah but seriously its not uncommon for a car to use more oil then normal while its new, just let the dealer know about it incase the problem doesnt go away.
