Oil - Magnatec or Edge

Ok so ive used magnatec in my E36 325i from the time i got it, prior to the 3xx xxx km when i got it, it was serviced at bmw so most likely also magnatec that was used.

On my 330d i used magnatec aswell however switched to shell as thats what bmw now supplies.

In terms of the difference between magnatec and Edge, Magnatec is not a high performance oil but for your daily drive applications its decent, but its not meant for your high performance vehicles either.Where as edge is alot better for your high revving or performance applications and does alot better under higher oil temps.

Edge is also fully synthetic while magnetec is part synthetic.

My personal experience with magnetec has been good and so has many others, multiple people say that it causes sludge however if you stick to crap bmw service intervals i wouldn't be surprised if it did. I have had no sludge buildup to date on my personal cars aswell as cars that i service using magnatec or edge.

In terms of what to use currently, it is suggested that once you use a fully synthetic oil you should not go back to part synthetic im also uncertain on the reasoning.

The question of other brands such as LM, Shell ect? Well its all much of a muchness, stick to the right viscosity and change your oil and filter on a regular bases and you will be fine with any "big name oil" be it castrol or lm or Mobil1

With regards to what oil to use Ll04 or ll01 should be fine

After changing from Castrol Magnatec to Liqui Moly I've noticed the engine is quieter and fuel consumption has improved slightly, it's worth every penny...

Will be my next route, just did the change to Magnatec a few months back. Just to get a bit more clarity here. When changing from magnatec to liqui-moly, are there any precautions to look out for? My personal route of doing a oil change is run an Engine flush of choice, open the sump nut and let the car drain overnight also remove the oil filter, dipstick and oil cap, make sure the car is parked indoors. Clean up everything and the next morning add new filters and oil. You can also raise one side of the car very slightly so that the sump plug is the lowest point. This will aid in draining everything out :coolShake:

Okay, So I never followed that whole 15 000-30 000 kms oil interval since I owned a car, but due to my driving patterns, I change annually.

So I decided to change to Liqui Moly. There are now further 2 options:

1. Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 - Purple Bottle or
2. Special Tec LL 5W-30 - Silver Bottle.

I then further decided to go for the 5W40 Purple bottle based on:

5 - This number represents the lubricant’s viscosity under lower temperatures, giving an indication of how the oil
will flow in the winter. The lower the first number, the thinner it is at low temperatures.

W - Winter
40 - This number represents the oil's viscosity under high temperatures.
The higher the number, the thicker the oil will stay at high temperatures.

and this is why:

I stay in an area in Joburg where I need to drive up a hill the moment I leave my driveway, so I think a low viscosity oil will be best when the car is cold and I am driving up a hill while the car is cold. And when it is hot, the oil will stay thicker offering more protection.

Merc always used Mobil1 on their AMG vehicles, and have recently switched over to Shell Helix.
I called AMG in Bryanston and spoke to an old tech about the reason for the switch, his simple answer was "because it's cheaper." But he swears by Mobil1 in AMG vehicles.

I called AMG in Bryanston and spoke to an old tech about the reason for the switch, his simple answer was "because it's cheaper." But he swears by Mobil1 in AMG vehicles.

Same story with Bmws switch to Shell from Castrol, Economies of scale, the more dealers that use shell the cheaper it gets.

Then again doesn't Ferrari use shell oil?

I don't think it has to do with the oil itself being cheaper. It's about marketing, so whatever kickback they get for advertising shell in amg engines.... All about the best deal at the time if contract renewal

Yeah that is true. Point is, they go with the best deal, not the best oil.

@Nikhil: Ya they do, I should actually find out what oil exactly though.

Shell actually use a novel gas-to-liquid process in producing 'PurePlus' - which apparently gives cleaner oil. The oil is made from natural gas. As a consumer it is difficult knowing what is marketing hype and what is true.

If I had any choice I wouldn't mind Edge, or Ultra or LM. For my purposes I'm sure there is minimal differences for 'average use'. If I were concerned I'd rather change more often using available good oil (Shell, Fuchs, LM or Castrol).
