Thanks ill have a look tonight, how to open it, but is there someway special to open it and what do i need to do the replacement? if anyone can help please.

When i open the oil filter housing to remove the filter will the oil flow over or not? must i put a oil pan underneath the car or is it not necessary?

There will be oil dripping from the oil filter itself, you put/wrap an old cloth around the housing to keep it from spilling on the engine.

:nonono: You only need an oil pan underneath the car if you're draining the oil.

I have an oil leak on my e46 318i. I can't seem to find it. The oil collects behind the oil filter housing. I have changed the housing gasket and the oil pressure sensor. The oil collects while and after I have driven. No visible leaks after the car is shut off. Please help. This leak is frustrating.

need your help please. I have a damn oil leak somewhere and am unable to find it...i have replaced the top gasket already but it seems to be leaking at the back of motor somewhere...any advice on what it could possibly be as a preventative measure...or would you suggest i strip everything and do fault finding from there...

any idea how much a full gasket set would cost? i am thinking it could even be a brittle oil pipe...

tappet cover is very common.
With the motor cold, use your hand an wipe at the back of the head where tappet cover meets the Head.

Also check the Heat shields that cover the manifolds.

because of the motors tilt, it usually runs down onto those.

i never replaced the tappet cover gasket on the 330i Motor i swopped in and she is starting to leak a lekker amount of oil now.

Depending how bad the leak is, you may not be getting allot of oil burning hence you dont see smoke...
