Oil Filter O-ring problem

hi guys,

i have in the past torqued the cap/cover as specified and the O-ring either comes off under torque or when the motor runs.

i have tried loosening the cap and then hand tightened this morning but the housing still leaks. think of using some high temp silicon.

any other options to prevent this thing from leaking?

You putting on a new o-ring or recycling the old one? Suggest you get a new one. If installed correctly it should work fine

New one. I might have got it right earlier. I got parties today. Getting dunk!
Torqed it to 25Nm! No leak.

ok, its leaking again. loosened it up and retorqued it a few times and every time it's leaked. thinking of taking it to a dealer. :thumbdo:

My E46 318 Touring had this problem, it was solved by getting an OEM Filter and O - Ring. The GUD O - Ring worked for a week and then the oil leak started. Try an OEM filter to see if there is a change.

well thats just it, i am using an OEM filter and O-ring so did not expect this. it was ok for a few days.

i think i may need to replace the cap. can anyone confirm if there is a ridged ring around the cap that the 0-ring slips into. i once got my car back without an o-ring and i think they may have overtorqued the cap and wore out the ridge.:argh:

BMW just quoted me R466 less 15% discount.

That's strange, and the housing does not have any fine cracks or anything like that maybe? Also maybe the inner lip of the oil filter cap is scarred somehow allowing oil to leak past the O-ring?!

well i got rid of what I thought was a flattened out permanent seal which was actually the old o-ring :flyfun:

used the car today and no leak. i am an idiot for not figuring this out sooner.:roflol:

Yep, this is how we all learn one way or the other! Hope you get it sorted out though!

it seems to be sorted. some oil dripping from the tray at the bottom so I am thinking of removing it and giving it a good clean. also wanna check for any other spills so I will park it over some paper overnight with the tray removed.
