Number plates

I just got my new number plates for my car. I need to replace the current ones which are fitted with four pop rivets. I need advice on how to do this or where I can take it to get them replaced.

I was thinking I could just drill out the old pop rivets and then pop in the new ones with the new plates. But with the small amount of space behind the plates, I'm scared I damage the car. If I could take the number plate holder off with the plates in then it would be an easy job but I don't know how :/

The number plate holder fits on with screws behind the plate so my guess would be drilling the old ones off.

Yup< the only way to remove the plate holder is to remove the plate first, therefor having to drill out the old rivets

If you just do it nice and slowly and dont force the drill bit you will be fine, just take it slow and dont rush

As an added protection, you can always place something behind the rivet so that if the bit does go through it doesnt touch the car

Take it to SMG Sir.

SMG quoted R300 for the job. I think I'll rather do it myself. I've got a buddy who said he'd help me. The trickiest part will be to get the rivets out without damaging the car

drill slowly with a 6 mm drill bit to get the head off . Then pull the number plate off and unscrew the holder . now punch the piece of rivet out .

I did this not so long ago, when i changed my plates.

As mentioned you need to use a low diameter bit, coz you only want to drill the mushroom head part of the rivet out, you dont want to make the numberplate holder hole bigger, or you will have to use mother-size rivets to hold the plate to the numberplate holder, and IMHO huge rivets look kakness.

Use the drill on slow drill setting, NOT HAMMER setting and try to get something like a thick cloth behind the numberplate holder, there always a small chance of drill through, or having the bit scrape the bumber as you pull out the drill from the hole and its still rotating.

Use too much force when drilling, and you WILL drill a holl into the bumper or bootlid.

Its like a 15 minute job, if you have all the right tools, and the right size rivets on hand.

I was quoted R200 per numberplate by Lyndhurst Auto when I needed to do this.

I already had the rivet-gun, I just paid like R30 for 20 rivets (or something like this) from Builders and that was that.

Good luck
