Hi All

In December 2016 I bought my 1st BMW , it’s a 2008 E90 330i triptronix. What a fanatsic car, comfort and power. Few weeks down the line I am having problems and I don’t know where to go for expert help in Cape Town.
A week after buying it: Enige making sound like a diesel car 
2 weeks ago: seems when car is hot or driven to hard it starts to miss. If I stop and swith engine off then the miss is gone, after while its back again.

Can ayone direct what to do or where to go in Cape Town area as I don’t want my 1st Beemer to leave a bitter taste.http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/images/smilies/Top24/cry.gif

Could be anything really..normally if a car start sounding like a diesel then it could be the timing chain on its way out. I have no experience in the E90 6cylinders but if thats the case i would recommend you to sort it asap.

As for Brilliant workshop...I will stay away..i had my fair share of problems there...more like making money off you than helping you.
SVG (Robin) is good and then theres RB(Ricky) as well.
Both these guys are exellent.
SVG is in Plumstead and RB in Tokai.
I'm sure just pulling up by either of this workshops they will be able to tell you straight away whts the problem if they hear that diesel sound.

Good luck buddy

Couple of questions

Whats the km on the car ?
What oil are you using?
When last was the car serviced ?
Does she sound like its missing on cold start up? and when its at operating temp does it go away?
When the car misses, are you able to go above 60km/h? If not its your valvetronic motor BUT I stand to be corrected.

I booked my baby in at RB and Speed demon you correct Ricky has extensive knowledge on BMW and his service is excellent.

Back to my baby booked her in last night for miss and engine that sounds like a diesel. I paid R570 for full diagnostic.
Outcome
Miss firing: he picked a few error codes for this and swapped plugs and other stuff around and problem resolve.
Errors:
DME: Combustion misfire, several cylinders
DME: Combustion misfire, cylinder 5 and then 6
DME: Catalytic conversion and conversion 2

Diesel like sound
Quotation
Exhaust and intake camshafts
Exhaust and intake lifters
Exhaust camshaft ledge
Exhaust and intake Vanos
Solenoid valves
Exhaust and intake roller drag levers
And few other stuff
Total bill include labour: 74k. . Yes 74k.. that's all original parts

He gave me few alternative options
1. Sell the car
2. Use second hand parts (only certain parts)
3. Buy second hand good engine
4. Use non original

anyone have ideas or where I can buy engine or cheaper parts..

So the mechanic replaced the spark plugs and 3 codes went out due to no misfire, then he went for the noise in the engine bay and found that there is sludge in the head by the vanos.

Do you still have the car? Ask him to do a oil flush and see if you can get rid of the sludge and then try and see what the car does. People are fast to just want to replace stuff, these days you dont get a mechanic anymore, it's more a replacer cause he doesnt want to do @#$%% .

Yes I still have it.. will try the oil flush. I am willing to try anything.. another thing cones to mind.. he said he also found metal shavings in the head

We have a sensor in our steering wheel housing, if this pappy decides that he doesnt want to count left to right exactly the same then all hell brakes loose and you end up dismantling the steering wheel, a lot of fun, ask me.

My long story is with this steering problem, 5 codes comes up, you grab your head and then maar start stripping the steering wheel, wipe the sensor weith a tissue and alcohol and walla, your 5 codes is gone. Moral of the story, find the problem and it will solve the rest.

So he found sludge in your head, thus meaning that the oil got old and sticky. Do an oil flush and then see if the problem persist. Remember that the vanos and lifters works on oil, the sludge is blocking the vanos from operating properly and some other stuff. Solve the sludge first
