I own a 2001 E46 M3 which I purchased in 2002 with approx. 30 000 km on the clock.
Only mod on the car is a decat. and a set of 19" rims.

Car picked up a knocking sound in the engine. I suspected it was the vanos because that was where the sound was the loudest. Stripped the vanos and replaced with Beisan seals, and replaced tensioner pad, started the car and the knocking sound was still there above 2000 rpm. I am now checking the big end bearings.

Confirmed big end bearing knock. Luckily no damage to the crankshaft. Ordered a set of bearings, car should be back on the road by the weekend.

What did the bearings look like??
That wear on crank you cant see with eye and most times you cant feel for wear.

My bro In laws e46 M3 was same. got a knock
bought bearings from BMW and replaced cause mechanic did not See any wear.

3 weeks later, knock was back

67k later, he bought new crank, Oil pump, bearings from Dealer and Car is now properly sorted.
