Hi all!

Although I've been creepily lurking, reading your posts for months now (unable to join forum for some reason), I am new to this. So here goes my introduction, and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction from here.

I'm Mike. I sometimes drink Worcester sauce out the bottle. And I sometimes impulsively buy broken things. Which brings me to my E36 M3...

I own 3 E36's, the latest of which is my 1997 S50B32 sedan. This thing has more issues than some of the girls I've dated and I am by no means qualified to take them all on. But I want to be clear that that was the point. To learn. Also couldn't resist buying the M version of a car that had major sentimental value to me growing up. Not that I've grown up...

I'm hoping, with all your help, I can get her fully restored and look forward to the input. I'm here to learn and to help in any way I can (by showing you what NOT to do).

Also, if anyone on here with knowledge of the S50B32 is in the Helderberg/Stellenbosch area and willing to come take a look (I have no idea what's "normal" on this car. Almost pulled my hair out for what I'm now quite sure is just lifter tick. Also don't know what 321hp should feel like) it would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Keep well everyone, and thanks in advance.

Mike welcome

The S50B32 does not have "lifters" as the cam rests on a bucket which has a 33mm shim on it.
When clearances are set correctly the engine runs as quiet as a sewing machine with the only audible ticking from the injectors.
Valve clearances are 0.28 to 0.33 mm on the exhaust and 0.18 to 0.23 mm on the intake.

I suspect that the noise you have is clearance related.

You will require a special tool to depress the bucket so that you can change shims.
The tool is available from the agents on special order or Amazon/ebay.
