Ahh flip that's crazy bro.

But don't let that put you off driving the car though and enjoying it. Atleast it hasn't given any signs that its on its way out anytime soon. Its nice to get quotes here and there, atleast you can use BMWs price as a benchmark when shopping around.

Don't stress about it though, deal with that when and if the time comes because you never know, maybe you'll upgrade before its time to replace or maybe it won't give up.

When I was shopping for my daily, I came across loads of N20s for sale and as much as I was aware of the timing chain issue, the prices that they go for can be really appealing. I did research on this engine and what I found online is that the 2015+ models with the N20 got a new design making it less prone to the issues the earlier model faced.

From the looks of it, you might be safe in terms of the timing chain.

Have you also gotten quotes from Ross Duncan and some other independent BMW specialists?
Not yet no, just went out in my lunch break. I did get a quote from Goldwagen - ~R8,000 for parts as opposed to BMW's ~R20,000.

Will get some comparatives this weekend, but looks like I won't be doing this now. I knew it's be costly, but crysis.

Yea I still drive her and enjoy her when I do bro. Not too worried about the timing chain, just thought I'd get it done if I could. I didn't expect it to be quite that much, I don't have that sort of money lying around at the moment.

Thanks for the link, was a good read.

Here's the quote. I see they've quoted VANOS Solenoid Valves as well. Anyone know if that's really necessary or are they just adding as many things as they can?
