N42 timing chain rattle?

Hi all, have an E46 318 N42 with a clatter in the top. The car originally came to me with all the symptoms of oil pump failure, flickering red oil light, clatter in the top, running hot, etc. Sent him off to the nearest BMW engine guy, where he got a rebuild done, but with a recon oil pump. Now, 3 months later, he's just got the car back, but the clatter is still there, along with a rough idle, both of which clear once the engine is revved, then slowly return at idle. He's running Magnatec oil, supplied ex BMW, in pints, at horrifying cost, so oil should be good. Oil stop still? Giving DTC codes 27BB camshaft control function, exhaust, 2782 camshaft sensor, exhaust, and 271D upstream O2 sensor. Any ideas? :ty:

My car's top chain guide broke. Apparently it is a common problem. The guide is cheap, but you need someone with specialised equipment to do the job. Because of this the cam can jump a tooth, causing the cam sensor fault. First do this and then see if the error is still there.

Many thanks, I've been assuming all is ok, the engine has just been done, but looks like it was only a half job. I avoided doing the engine myself due to dust, now I'll have to open it anyway. :argh:

I had to do the cam tensioner as well due to sludge, the chain was loose when no oil pressure but when u revved it the noise went away.

Also did the vanos on the exhaust .....not a cheap part.

I'll bet, makes one wonder about the benefits of technology! Where are the days of repairs on the road with a screwdriver and pliers, try it on an F30! :nonono:
