Latest updates...

So my OZ Ultraleggera wheel is a write off... The whole wheel twisted. Well the wheel is what absorbed the entire impact so it was expected. Luckily this was an OEM rim as I shudder to think how much more damage the car could have had were it a replica.

Couldn't find a replacement wheel. Unfortunately the wheel being non HLT is a problem. OZ no longer make the 19" Ultraleggera in non HLT. Only in 18." The 19s and 20s are HLT to be lighter and stronger due to increased size. The centre cap size on a HLT wheel is also different. Solution? Buy a set of new HLT wheels which funds won't allow.

So I sourced a set of OEM 19" Pretorias. It came off a customers car that had it on for maybe 10kms. The wheel is spotless. I in anyways always liked the Pretoria wheel. They will have to do the job for now until I can save for a set of replacement OZ wheels.

For those wondering what the OEM.spec on Pretorias are:

Bought a new S-Drive tyre. The one involved in the accident was destroyed. Then had my wheels removed off my R and the rubber transferred to the Pretorias. Prets are now on my R. Does look classy, but I still miss my OZ wheels. Must say once you have owned a set of OZ's you don't want anything else...

At this point, the insurance had finally decided to give the go ahead and repair my R.

Work was started to complete the drivetrain/suspension assembly.

New right subframe section, wheel bearing, top shock mounts and bearings and drop links,(I replaced both sides) as well as the right driveshaft and the Superpro LCAs with bushes kit.

New Subframe bolts were installed. Subframe collars were ok and everything has been torqued down nicely.

Took car for a drive up and down the shop. So far no clunks or bangs normally caused by a loose subframe or worn or faulty suspension parts. Took the car to the back where they washed off all dirt/dust and grease from the chassis and motor underneath.

Car's parts were assembled and checked that they line up 100% before going to the paint room...

My OEM bonnet that I kept was reused and the notch was filled to retain the badgeless look.

Fender was rolled to match the left side of my car. Small kink in the right door was also noticed and will be done as well.

I also managed to source a non HLT 19" OZ wheel via ebay.

Will have the wheel colour matched and decide whether I will be re fitting them. I have an itch for a larger wheel, but have not fully decided yet.

Parts have been polished. Car will now move to assembly section. Removal of windscreen along with dash to install replacements. Exterior body parts will be fitted and car finished up.

The wait is extremely horrible. Gonna feel so good to finally have her back one day.

See the airbags popped. Did Insurance still approve repair. Heard so much stories where guys pride and joys were written off with minor damage but due to airbag popping the car was written off.

Yes bud. They wanted to write the car off due to the airbags popping. There wasn't a lot of damage, but it was expensive damage. And Santam normally write off if the damage amount is more than 50% of the car's book value.

Had a huge fight to try salvage the car. Some parts I actually paid for to remove from quote so insurance could cover the expensive parts.

Stripping the dash with the ignition on.....surely not the best idea....

Anyway, nice to see someone show some passion to get a car repaired rather than just written off because of airbag deployment - it is quite sad that it is so expensive to replace them.
Many a car has been written off due to relatively basic accident damage because of the airbags.

liking the progress....

when you manufacturers change the way they build cars to accommodate a simple airbag deployment, or does the deployment reduce the strength of the dash after deployment...?
