So my F30 328i is in at BMW as of this morning for all the M-Performance loving, YAAAY cant wait to fetch her later... anyway

BMW gave me a 2014 F30 320d M-Sport for the day and as a pertrol fan boy I felt it was important for me to say that I finally get what all the tractor fan boys are saying.

I have test driven the F30 320i a few times and the 320d is just, and I never thought I would ever say this but, its just on another level. That torque is awesome but unlike the 320i that just keeps revving with ease, the 320d's power dies off quickly once it hits higher revs. You would think then that the 320i would be a quicker car... but the low end torque makes up for it though and accelerates the diesal to the point of the power dying off and I think that's why the 2 cars are similar 0-100.

What I can say though is halfway to work I just couldnt stand the sound that diesal engine makes. its like the engine is full of sand, and for me this is what puts me off of diesals. (The only thing). Its so loud in the cabin compared to my 328i. For me an engine needs to sounds crisp and clean, not dirty and broken.

The 320d is def a great buy for the diesal fanboys though, drives like a dream. :blowheart:

I hear what your saying

Now go try a 330d, whereby you could put wierd duckies with battle axes in the motor, the torque means you do not care..

A good, objective report of a diesel by a petrol fan. Good post !

P.S.

I think your 328i is an awesome car. If I was forced to buy a petrol BMW, it would be my choice.

I was off the same opinion regarding the noise but i liked the diesel whine with the turbo...now the sound basically deafened after ownership of a diesel and makes a petrol car sound like a hybrid!! :clapper:

The 320d is good in town, just on the open road the lack of power for overtaking at speed is not the best.. It really could have done with a bit more power from the factory..

That's where a remap comes into play. But honestly though I never found the car to be under powered on the highway even when it was stock. But I suppose you could always do with a little more power :D

Eish bud, maybe its just me but i have no issues with overtaking at all....but since you mentioned it, I am going to add tha onto my business case to the Minister of Finance at home, for my software upgrade & mods on the car.

I guess previous experience will play a role in this perception.

Overtaking power at speed is actually one of the reasons I love my 320d. Its is one of the reasons that if I feel the need to, I can weave my way through high speed traffic on the highway effortlessly.

But then, I was used to smaller engined petrol cars all my life. My 320d just feels like an absolute powerhouse (at any speed) compared to my previous 1,4 - 2,0 petrol cars.

I guess if one is used to drivng more powerful cars, then one would have a different frame of reference.

Then, there is also that some people take a while to learn where the strength of the diesel lies. I quickly learned not to drop gears when overtaking at speed. Where this was the norm with petrol cars.

diesel torque is addictive.. plain and simple.

had a friendly run in with a nissan 370z last week on the n14, the look on his face moving left after just not getting away from this beaten up e46 was priceless..
