My first BMW

Hi everyone.

Recently purchased a 2012 E82 125i M Sport Coupe AT from SMG Cape Town. Car had 49,000km on the clock on date of delivery and I am loving it.

My history of previously owned cars is as follows -

Ford Fiesta ST Ecoboost
Nissan 370Z
Ford Focus Mk2 1.8Si
Audi TT RS Plus
VW Mk1 Golf Track Car Project (RIP)
Toyota GT86 High Spec
Honda Civic Type R FN2 Championship Edition
Honda Civic Type R FN2 FN2

Those who used to do regular track days at Killarney might have remember my red Mk1 Citi Golf with white wheels at nearly every open track day as well as my 370z which made regular appearances.

Looking forward to be part of the BMW community.

Its about the same as my 370z so I am used to high consumption. Although, the 370 did come with more punch per gallon...

Will post pics shortly.

OP, How do you find the ride now from the other cars you drove in regards to performance, comfort and feeling?

If I had to sum it up in one word it would be "classier".

I would have to compare it to my 370 and TT RS to answer your question.

My 370 was tuned and pretty potent kicking out 275kw ATF on Dynotec's (very unforgiving) dyno here in CPT and my TT RS made around the same power on the same dyno but with a whopping 535nm of torque. So when it comes to straight line speed there is a massive difference, but I have realized that on Cape Town roads, that kind of power is actually unusable and you do stupid speeds in no time. Being at the coast, I don't feel like the 125i lacks powers for a daily driver.

When it comes to balance, the BMW is in a different league though. The chassis on the TT RS was horrific especially with the Haldex "AWD" system. It basically handled like a FWD car on corner entry then unpredictably sucks you into the corner when it transfers power to the rear wheels. My 370z was setup for the track with Tein fully adjustable coil overs so it nice to have more comfort again in the BMW.

The 370 was bullet proof never needed more than regular servicing and this is after many hours of track time. My Audi which at one point was my weekend ride spent more time at Audi CPT's workshop than on the road. My freeway plan claims added up to more than the price I paid for the car (+R500k) :skit:

The BMW's interior also feels better put together than the Z and Audi as my Audi seats prematurely wore out at 40k km when I let it go.

In summary, the BMW's fun factor is greater than the TT RS and is classier and less in your face than my old Z.

When I am done with renovating my new house I plan to build a track car again to satisfy my need for speed.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new Bmw. What are your plans with the 125i seeing that some of your previous rides were tuned?.

Going to keep it 100% stock. I only travel 10-12km's a day to work and back so the aim is to keep this car in tip top condition.

I would like to do the 190kw+ tune using the 130i intake and uprated software but I have other priorities so I need this car to run trouble free for a few years. Also, I still need to find a tuner in CPT that did this before as well as one that I can trust.

I plan on building a dedicated track car in 3-4 years time again to satisfy my need for speed :)

I'm obsessive about maintenance (pretty much OCD) so hopefully this car will last me the next 7-10 years
