My e30 obsession

I'm new to this forum, but not really to the BMW Scene I have been around since the DTM Power days, and was one of the original owners and founders of the E30 Club SA. I can add that while I do like the other e30 models, I really only see them as parts cars for the one I love e30's.

Just a quick recap over the last 6yr's or so...

This here was my 1st love (and only car I've ever loved, rather than seeing it as just a car to drive/have fun in). My folks bought it brand new back in 1991 a 325i MEX and it stuck around till I was 18, and was handed to me. I loved this car and my dad always joked that he should have taken my advice and bought the red one (which was a 325iS).

It took me around 2yr's to get it from a stock state, to this...

I was one of the very few people at that time to have original Borbet Type A's. It also had a rather potent 2.9lt m20 stroker which I managed to run a 14.5sec in at Tarlton (to my knowledge that is still the 2nd fastest N/A M20 e30 at altitude)

Somewhere along there I got into what I call real racing, and track racing that is. I started converting the car slowly into a track day specimen.

Then came it's untimely demise.

I was coming home from Budler Motorsport one evening and a guy decided to turn in front of me, I tried to avoid but he turned back realising his mistake and hence this.

From those ashes, the next project was born.

We (being my dad and I) picked up a rolling shell. a 1985 323i 2dr. The initial plan being to transfer over almost everything we could from the Silver car, cage it and race it.

Well that snow balled out of control! It became a while we're in there we might as well do this, and evolved into it must be the ultimate. so what went from a simple rebuild became, tubular suspension, adjustable everything, modified chassis, wide fenders, FIA spec 1991 e30 M3 DTM cage, aero etc etc etc.

Unfortunately due to my financial circumstances I can't complete the project, nor would I have the funds to race it. So it has been stripped down to a rolling chassis (minus all the trick stuff), and has been put up for sale.

In the time that this car was being build I also picked up a 1989 316... M10 Carb.

I ran ok, but wasn't anything to write home about.

I did some maintenance, and fitted a set of lowering springs... Then the bug bit and I started taking the car apart to modify. In the 3 years that have passed since then I have worked on the car and made it my own.

I repainted it, and fitted some spare parts from the race car (aka, AP Racing brakes, Sachs and Mark Sax Coilovers, as well as re painted it, then pulled out the arches. I've also fitted the carbon bonnet and bootlid from the race car. Which I need to paint all white and fill some holes

Rolling on the race cars wheels for a bit :p

From there I pulled the arches a teeny bit more, and got hold of some wheels I've always liked.

Being a street warrior type car I went with a minimalist interior, Door cards, A pillars and shift boot all in grey alcantera (in the pic the door card wasn't finished)

IMG00730-20110422-1416.jpg

I then started on the engine... M10b18 and that's how it's staying... with some boost ;)

That's roughly where the pictures end with the motor. I am waiting on the block to return from being bored and o-ringed. The bottom end remains stock bar a rebuild, and the head has a 290 deg regrind, stiffer valves springs and a slight porting.

Not looking to build a big bad mean motor this time around. I will save that for later. When I find a 2.0lt bottom end to use.

With the demise of my race car, this car would see some track action, so I decided I should have a half cage.

Basically all that is done is the main hoop has been mocked up.

It will be more for harness attachment than anything else, and I will be reinstalling the rear seats although no one could sit in them.

I have worked on the car since then with fitting of some body panels, but I haven't' taken pictures. I will however snap some and some when I commence the engine build as soon as I have the block back.

Hi welcome , I had a e30 325i and hit a pole sideways stuffing up right front fender etc .Fixed up and needs work on rust . Bought a running 320i auto for the body , similar story to yours-front left smash . Now looking again!!!! ( must go look at one next week ) The e36 325i ( with 3.46 diff ) and 328i ( std ) can run but e30 rules !!!!-no female can understand that !!

Thanks guys. Been a long road and I've missed driving an e30 as well as being on the track. A Corsa LDV isn't much fun to drive :argh:

is the e30 forum still blocked for veiw if you not a member?

It's only certain forums that are blocked if you're not a member, can't really remember. It was a long time back since I was in the forum backend.

Definitely an E30 obsession, can't blame you, only if you've driven one, will you understand what a box is all about.

Good luck with the finishing touches of the build, waiting for more pics
